Scott S. Posted October 29, 2024 Posted October 29, 2024 I've been tossing around the idea of upgrading my rear springs. Montelishi's starting to sag a bit since I got her. Been going through the old posts and there were a few articles regarding using El Camino springs, (Moog cc507). Was just wonder if those of you who did the swap are still happy with the results you got ??? Scott. Quote
420ponies Posted October 29, 2024 Posted October 29, 2024 I'll have a pair to get rid of soon. Been on my car for the last 8 yrs? Moog Vari Rate springs. Best upgrade to the suspension since I owned the car. I'm upgrading to coil over and these will be available in the near future. PM me if interested. 2 Quote
Scott S. Posted October 29, 2024 Author Posted October 29, 2024 Hey James, So you liked them ??? I'd probably be interested...... Depending on what kind of shipping fees are involved. $$$$ !!! I'll keep you in mind. Scott. Quote
alain boileau Posted October 29, 2024 Posted October 29, 2024 🙂Depends which look you are going for Factory look stay with original coils .More custom look go with a different coil Remember if you modify it may affect road manners of vehicle Alain🙂 1 Quote
Scott S. Posted October 29, 2024 Author Posted October 29, 2024 Hey Alain, I'm trying to maintain something fairly stock, but with all the weight I keep in the trunk, Montelishi's definitely riding about 1 1/2"-2" lower at the back then when I got her. Not sure if it's just age, or swapping in the 12 bolt may have effected this, but she sits "front end high". I'd like to get a bit more clearance at the back tires too, just incase I upsize them. Scott S. Posted October 29, 2024 Author Posted October 29, 2024 Before. After. And NO !!! It's NOT because I'm a "Big Guy" 1 1 Quote
Chevy Dave Posted October 29, 2024 Posted October 29, 2024 My first choice would be to use the Moog Cargo Coils, they are progressive and become stiffer as you load more weight in the trunk. The ride height should be stock. Another solution is to install air shocks and use only enough air pressure to level the car based on the load. 1 Quote
Michael Boyte Posted October 30, 2024 Posted October 30, 2024 Wow, that is a lot !! I'm going to have to go with the Big guy theory 😂 sorry ! 1 1 Quote
Grant MacPherson Posted October 30, 2024 Posted October 30, 2024 Used moog cargo coils 50 years ago in my 71 and when I bought my 70 SS 5 years ago used them again. Ride height works perfect with the ALC on the SS's. 1 Quote
alain boileau Posted October 30, 2024 Posted October 30, 2024 🙂Did you or previous owner put big block coils on the car? Small block and big block coils are different Alain🙂 1 Quote

Montelishi had air shocks when I bought her, but they were shot. Still sat that high with them broken, so I'm thinking springs. The second picture is after I installed KYB shocks. Quote

But according to the V.I.N. she is a 350 cid car and has a 350 cid in her. Quote
alain boileau Posted October 30, 2024 Posted October 30, 2024 🙂So to bring the car to original ride height I would go with the standard suspension coils. Which should bring the car back to original height. You would like a little bit better ride and handling medium gas shocks and a rear sway bar This should help a lot. This is my 2cents worth Alain🙂 Quote

I have a brand new set of Monroe air shocks in the rear of my 72, but I have to air them all the way up to get the muscle car stance. I know my coil springs are the OEM factory 1972 it came with from the factory, but I definitely need a newer set that will give me more height, so I don't have to air the shocks all the way up. Quote
420ponies Posted October 30, 2024 Posted October 30, 2024 (edited) Sorry, they are already spoken for. I have ran these coil springs with air shocks ( at 25 psi ,so they work ) , and the coil springs bring the car just a little above level. But the big thing is that the more weight in the trunk , no sag. Plus they ride the same with or without the extra weight. Edited October 31, 2024 by 420ponies added content 1 Quote
420ponies Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 Just to be clear on what we are talking about. MOOG moog-cc507 . These are the Vari-Rate rear coil springs. 1 Quote
Chevy Dave Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 Some members have used CC501, what is the difference between them and cc507? Quote
Scott S. Posted October 31, 2024 Author Posted October 31, 2024 The "501" is 1 1/3" shorter unloaded, and 1/2" shorter loaded...... Quote

Scott S. Posted October 31, 2024 Author Posted October 31, 2024 With 2" difference in loaded height, I'm thinking that the 501's will be closer but a bit stiffer...... Quote

The info I'd found said that the 507's had a loaded height of 8.5". Good to know that they're actually 10". Quote

It's 3 cents here in Canada, could go higher depending on the exchange rate. I'm actually looking to give it a bit of a boost/rake in the back. I notice the sag when driving it the way it is now. Like the feel of a raised rear. Thanks. Quote
