This just popped up while surfing YouTube to share videos with my daughter of music I used to listen to growing up. Sorry if it’s a repeat…

Here’s a different way to link to it if the first one won’t work

Do they have music on YouTube that old ? 🤣

That's pretty neat. On my 71 they couldn't have done the water test because there is a panel missing where the cowling channel goes down to the bottom. If I take off the inside kick panel and put my arm in where the wipers go down, I can put my hand inside the car. It proves that the previous owner never left it outside in rain or the floor boards would have been rusted through. The car is totally rust free. It's one of the best running cars that I have owned.

pretty cool, after owning my 72 custom for 44 + years i can say i have never used the shoulder seat belt, roger

Neither have I , I always kept it folded neatly in it's holder. Otherwise it would have been in my way, or just swinging down, either way, I didn't ever use it

I do all the time, when I did my interior I raised the back of the seat up a little bit so that shortened the belt just a bit and I gained a little weight so the lap belt don't go around me any more so I just use  shoulder belt when I do use a belt.

Steve, I would have to go with Seat belt extenders ! Definitely would not be exercise or even cutting back on my over consumption of the food's that I enjoy the most... Steak,  Seafood, Ribs and of course more,...Steak , Seafood and Ribs !!! 😂 😂

The feds made seat belts mandatory in 68 and shoulders in the later half of 1970. Never wore any until the state made it mandatory. Only use the lap belts on the Monte.

Roger i never wore mine either, i only had the car less than half of your 44 years though.

But on another note (and don't let Glen see this) I never wear my seat belt at all, i find it very restricting. I don't tell, or recommend anyone else to do this. I even taught my kids and grandkids to put them on before i start driving. I normally follow all the rules in life, but this one i just cant get comfortable doing!!

Please don't anyone take this as an ok not to wear them!!!

Back in the day when it was still optional up here in Alberta, I wore mine in my T-Type..... Simply because if you took a corner any faster than 50 mph, you could find yourself sitting in the passengers seat. :no

Yep. Good call. Please obey the law, stay safe and always wear your safety belt.

I never wore one until I started taking flying lessons, then it just became habit. I only wear the shoulder belt in the Monte at the track tho.

North Carolina passed the seat belt law in 1986. It went into effect January 1st 1987. The reason I remember this is because I never wore a seatbelt until Dec. of 1986. That’s when I bought my 1986 Monte Carlo SS. When I drove it off the lot I started wearing a seatbelt and have never looked back.

I had a 26 year gap in driving first gens (1998 - 2024).  For my first one, I only drove with the lap belt on.  During that interim time, every car we have had has shoulder harnesses because they are newer cars.  Now, in my experience, I broke out the shoulder harness in my first gen and I actually feel safer.

Great video.  Makes me wish I had a time machine and period correct cash.  I would go back and pick up a dozen or so and keep them garaged and always maintained!

I especially love the 1:27-1:38 mark.  No doubt that perspective was filmed from the back seat of a ‘70 or ‘71 SS Monte 💪🏼😂

Regarding belt usage. I only wear the lap belt in the Montes.  And like you, Willie, I USED to seldom wear them at all, especially at work and especially in my younger years.

Part of that was the feeling of invincibility, part needing to bail out of the car quickly and unencumbered, whether to foot chase or - God forbid - seek cover or concealment if fired upon. That said, I haven’t written a “mover” (moving violation) in close to 30 years.  Traffic enforcement wasn’t my bag unless tickets were needed for PC.  But I’d usually find someone else to write them (I hated going to traffic court).

Fast forward… the amount of ignorant, distracted, stoned or just plain bad drivers on the roads today is mind boggling. I seriously doubt 90% of the people who pass thru the DMV actually pass the practical - let alone written - part of the exam. Which is why I wear my belt religiously.

Amy laughs when we go out and she drives… muscle memory has me reaching for the belt over my left shoulder… from the passenger seat😂.  Muscle memory also has me trying to adjust the radio on Vicky’s steering wheel when I do drive, even though those buttons don’t exist.  I average 350-400 miles a week in the squad so that’s pretty much all I know.

The majority of my time in the squad is on the highways. And unless I can’t because of traffic, I routinely drive 80 mph+, so the belt is a no brainer. I’ve seen way too many horrible accidents where belts weren’t used, so that’s always a subliminal reminder.

I switched my 71 to the Morris belt lap shoulder combo, will also do the 70&72. I don’t feel comfortable not having the shoulder. The other reasons are , in the video you see the guy doing the double toss on the shoulder belt to get it in the car and I didn’t want to tear up the headliner taking it in and out.
