I ordered a reproduction door decal but was disappointed when it was the wrong size, font and colour. I know there are other decals available online but decided to make a fun project out of it.

I used MS Excel and MS Paint to put these together. So far it is turning out good. I don’t have the exact fonts but got it pretty close. These are some test ones I printed on paper. The final ones will be printed on vinyl decals and then a clear decal overlay added to give the original look. I have also made the Oshawa decal. The last photo is a piece of my original 1970 decal overtop a test printed one.

They look fantastic Aaron  !! 👌 At this point, very few individuals if any would question it's originality.

When I was researching that stuff for my car at the time, I ran across some info that led me to an 'IBM 1403 10 Pitch' font for the VIN & Date fields (my 72 also has weight numbers in there too, right below the date ). From what I can see, it was a ribbon type printer, which could be why it isn't a very crisp font. It also appears to be the same type font used on my original window sticker, so that could be used here maybe as well.

The font that replicates what the machine used can be downloaded here:

http://ibm-1401.info/IBM140310Pitch-Regular.otf

Save it to your computer & Install. It will show up in your MS products. Below is a sample I printed out in a Word Document.

If you like the font a little crisper, there is an 'Artisan12' also. It can be downloaded from various sources. The numbers don't quite look right on that one though. Below is a link to an example:

I downloaded & installed this one from here just now:

Also included below in the download section, a couple .pdf printouts of the font sheets.

This link below was very useful in finding the font:

🙂At the time of the restoration of my 70 and 72 I used door decals from Inline Tube

I also lucked in a very old band typewriter the fonte is quite close to original:yay:

I have been using this for the last 30yrs.

But you seem to have found a much better way congrats

Alain🙂

I heard that they used a Royal typewriter.

The font used to type the VIN in the US plants is different than the Canadian plant. I'm currently working on some adjustments.

Probably a more 'polite' type of font 😄

I managed to create the fonts needed. I am seeing differences between 1970 vs 1971 of the same plant as well. I would like to request photos of original US built decals so I can dial in the correct fonts. You can post here or send me a message. 🙂

Here is my original, and also the one that ECS did for me about 4 years ago.

I just found this link too, ...look at the blue tags, they also show a Canadian one in the mix.:

I received the printed decals today. They are printed on vinyl decals, then laminated and finally cut. I also had the print shop make a clear decal that is slightly larger to put overtop creating the same look as the original. There’s a few tweaks I might make and reprint again but overall happy so far.

Here’s a piece of my original decal placed on a new one. The colour is off slightly so may adjust on my next batch.

Thank you to those who have posted some examples of original decals. They have been helpful for my research. I have put together a number of templates depending on year and plant as there are several variations. There seems to be two different font types and I have created both. Some numbers are quite unique and not a readily available font so had to create them pixel by pixel. They are not perfect but very close. The location of the VIN and date varies by plant/year. Also some plants use a “-“ between the month and year while others use a “/“. I see a lot of reproductions that are way off on these details but I’m a picky guy. I’m still looking for more examples of original decals so keep them coming. 🙂
