Trhbub Posted January 3 Posted January 3 (edited) Thanks you letting us join. We (wife and I) have a 72’. Her father gave it to her a couple of years ago. Just finished a frame off, still need to update the interior. First problem we had was the original neutral safety switch went bad. Ordering a new one, but the old one is 6 terminals and all the new ones are 7 terminals….what is the extra single one for? Thanks in advance. Oh yea, we are in north GA. Michael Boyte Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Welcome to the club my friend ! Congratulations on receiving your father-in-law's 72 Monte, in my opinion you definitely have the best year ( I too have a 72 😂) you will find that the people here are willing to help in any way possible. And definitely have the most knowledge of the First Gen Monte that you will ever find anywhere. Again welcome to the family !!! 2 1 Quote

Canuck Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Welcome! This is a great group here. I have not had to change a NSS before so have not run across that issue. You may bd able to still plug everything in and leave the extra terminal alone. 2 1 Quote
Dtret Posted January 3 Posted January 3 I’m assuming since it’s a 72 it’s mounted on the steering column regardless if it’s a floor shift or column shift. Correct? By the way welcome to you and your wife. Great group here. Thanks for coming on board. . 2 1 Quote

Looks like 'early production' models had the switch on the shifter. There are also 2 terminals on there for the seat belt warning system (right side of switch). 3 Quote
Trhbub Posted January 3 Author Posted January 3 It is on the column. Will just plug in the ones I have and leave the extra open, just wondering what extra one was. Here’s a pic of when we got it. Post new pics of color change later. 12 Quote

Scott S. Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Welcome to the group Anthony, I hope you'll find it as helpful as the rest of us have. As for your question, I'd have to go along with the theory that the 7th lead is for the seat belt warning system..... I have a '70 that doesn't have that lead, and because reproductions are built to cover all scenarios, they sometimes have "extra" connections. I discovered that when I replaced my headlight switch. lol P.S.... Nice Monte. Scott. 2 1 Quote
Marks71 Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Welcome Anthony, beautiful Monte, sounds real healthy too. I’m partial to silver also. 2 1 Quote

I looked around for close to an hour earlier. Can't find anything that specifically says what that 7th terminal does. The part lists for 68-73 GM, so it's possible something in 73 and later is the reason, and the rest of it is backwards compatible. For 70-71, the 4 terminal switch would work fine (starter solenoid & reverse lights), for 72 with the seat belt warning system, you would use the 6 terminal switch (if you wanted to keep it intact).. I have some later service manuals in the shop, I'll poke around there later or tomorrow. 4 1 Quote

All it said was that the four tab was for console cars, whereas the 6/7 tab was for non-console cars. 2 Quote
