Rob Peters Posted February 21 Posted February 21 Many of our members have tried to replace the front dual speakers for them Monte's but found out the speakers they have ordered don't come even close to fitting. This sometimes is because the front dual (stereo) speakers are much smaller than the center mounted speaker that would come in a car without air conditioning. Even if you were to find a small 10 ohm speaker for the dual speaker set-up members have still had issues getting them to mount due to the special mounting brackets on these speakers. The information below will help you with getting speakers to replace these front speakers. This place also has rear speakers for our cars that are of high quality. I got this information from member Frank O'Connell and ordered from them. The website for the speakers is https://www.smelectrotech.com Their contact information is: Electro tech, Inc Contact Information Telephone: Direct: (763) 780 - 2861 Hours: 9AM to 5PM Central Time M-F Email: turnswitch@turnswitch.com I can tell you they are sometimes slow to respond to emails and phone messages because they do a lot of shows. They were very helpful over the phone. I got this information from Frank O'Connell (THANKS FRANK). He got his front speakers from them but he got his rear speakers off of ebay. I also ordered my rear speakers from Electro Tech. The mounting holes in the rear speakers align up perfectly with the rear speaker grills rob 7 Quote
willie Posted February 21 Posted February 21 I did not have mine replaced i don't remember his name but i had mine rebuilt. Did not want any problems fitting back in, as we all know that front drivers side is a PIA. If anyone needs his name i will dig it out and let you know. If memory serves me right i got his phone out of Hemmings mag. Quote
DragCat Posted February 21 Posted February 21 When I got my Cougar, it didn't have rear speakers. I never liked when people cut holes in the rear side panels for speakers and as a vert there was no package tray. Luckily I came across a dual speaker for the dash and just wired them as the rears when I upgraded the stereo. I did run new wires for the new door speakers. As someone else here has said, I hardly even turn on the stereo anyway . I think at the time, the Kenwood cost the same as if I were to have the console clock "reworked" and it had a clock 🤣 I'm old school and still wear a watch too 1 Quote

I got another original 70 rear speaker grill so it will be as it could have been from the factory, rob 1 Quote

Obviously I'm not a original/stock guy but not a fan of hacking up things "sometimes" 🤣 How many of us had the "equalizers" mounted under the dash back in the day. If I was a road trip kinda guy I'd definitely be upgrading the audio in the Monte. Now with the meets coming up, I'm gonna cal that a modification 🤣🤣 JK 2 Quote
Blackhawk Posted February 22 Posted February 22 It looks like they got back into radio restorations, I think they stopped doing that for a while after the owner passed and his son took over. Quote

It is designed to clear the dash cluster. Aftermarket speakers may be the correct size but the mounting points are different. If you try to make modifications you risk damaging the printed circuit on the back of the guage cluster. All Montes with stereo or AC have the correct bracket and speaker. Cars with am radios without AC have a single speaker in the center of the dash. The best solution for the drivers side is to use the correct bracket and have the speaker reconed. If anyone is interested I can provide the associated part numbers. Hope this helps with your speaker project. 3 Quote

Jason72 Posted February 26 Posted February 26 Check out crutchfield audio. I bought all of my stuff from them. I don’t remember having any fitting issues I just did a sound system in a chevelle last summer. Turned out great Quote

To be clear all of my posts are related to original restorations. Crutchfield does a great job with aftermarket equipment but does not provide 10 ohm speakers as required for original equipment radios. Quote

The reason for this post was to steer members to a company making 10 ohm speakers that fit without any alterations. These dual front speakers come with proper mounting brackets attached. rob 1 Quote

I am primarily an original restoration guy and also respect owners who choose to modify their vehicles. Over the years I have identified the resources who can do restorations that are not my forte and am happy to share them with members who are interested in originality. I posted to you awhile ago the the name and phone number of a guy who specializes in classic radio refurbusing and speaker reconing for 1970's GM cars. Best, Paul Not the one who fell:) 1 Quote

No problem, just clarifying. rob, not the person who made the other Paul fall Quote
