clint w Posted February 22 Posted February 22 I've been looking at Monte Carlos for sale and have run across quite a few with original paint. I'm wanting a car with a nice paint job. I don't think I could have a original paint car repainted. I come from the air-cooled VW world and you DO NOT repaint OG paint cars. VW guys go as far as to strip paint back down to the original paint on their VWs. I was wondering if FGMC guys felt the same way about original paint? Quote
cny first gen 71 Posted February 22 Posted February 22 I guess it depends on the look your going for or complete original. My car was painted very badly when I got it so that had to go. I did it myself in my garage at home, it looks better than before but far from perfect for sure. But I did learn a lot while I was doing it and could probably do a better job now. It depends on what your looking for. 5 Quote
Canuck Posted February 22 Posted February 22 It would depend on how bad the original paint was. If it still looked good from 10 ft, I would personally leave it alone. 8 Quote
Rob Peters Posted February 22 Posted February 22 I have seen many with original paint, some of them I would never consider repainting and others I would not think twice about painting it. There is something to be proud of in having a true survivor and to some a survivor may hold more value than a car with a repaint. My car is a a very nice unrestored Monte but it has had a repaint. It was repainted before I purchased it almost 25 years ago so I did not see it prior to it being My repainted but based upon the condition of the car I can't help but think the paint didn't look too bad. I have tried to keep it as original as I could and at the same time keeping it safe. rob 4 Quote
jft69z Posted February 22 Posted February 22 Like the others said, it all depends what you're looking for, and willing to accept. As far as FGMC guys take on it, I don't think you'll find too many (if anyone) who is going to be that fanatical to strip the paint down to the original layer. 4 Quote
Canuck Posted February 22 Posted February 22 Here’s an original paint 1971 that a member has that I would never consider repainting. It’s beautiful and only has a few minor marks on it. 28,000 miles and it’s for sale. 4 Quote
DragCat Posted February 22 Posted February 22 I'm just gonna default to my common answer, its your car do what you want 3 Quote
Dtret Posted February 22 Posted February 22 My 72 Custom is as original as it gets but I think it deserves to look it’s best. Do a repaint is not out of the question BUT it’s not something that I’m embarrassed to take anywhere either. 7 Quote

Jared Richey Posted February 26 Posted February 26 This is our 60 Pontiac Catilina Flat Top. Original Paint! No way I'd paint this car. 84k miles Rust Free. But if it ever got damaged, there's no saving it. It'd have to be painted all over. No matching 1960 Paint and make it look right. 8 Quote
Leghome Posted February 27 Posted February 27 Nice looking. My 2nd car was a 60 Catilina but it was a sedan. Drove it for 2 years and then traded it even to my dad for a 59 ford 2 door sedan so I could trade it oof for a 61 Impala bubble top. 5 Quote
Vaughn Posted February 28 Posted February 28 Interesting question. I like to keep them as original as possible up to a certain point. This is my 1971 350 4 speed with 90,000 miles. The paint is cracked and chipped in areas. Even comes with two rust holes in the lower front fenders, but the trim covers most of it, lol. The car is so well documented and so original, i just cant bring myself to paint it.....yet. 2 Quote

1970mcss Posted March 1 Posted March 1 Great looking Monte. If you want you could sell it to me and I could get the paint fixed. Good luck with your decision. Quote
