Looking for a factory steel 70 12 bolt cover. No notch. Mine is a little too pitted for me to use.

Sometimes you don't.

If I remember right, the "dented" one is for type 4 carrier/ring gears, anything over 3.73:1 ratios.

Not the one for the ring gear. The one at the 11:00 position

I believe they are all the same but not a 100 percent.

I'll look at my stock 12 bolt cover. I want an aftermarket 12 bolt cover for mine, since it's going from 2.73 ratio to 3.31 and a brand-new Yukon posi.

This is the cover I have on my 12 bolt differential with 3.31:1 gear ratio.

The notch is there for the brake line clip.

Type 1 is for 2.56:1 ratio and smaller

Type 2 is for 2.73:1 to 3.08:1 ratio

Type 3 is for 3.23:1 to 3.73: ratio

Type 4 is for 4.10:1 ratio and larger

Or so I've read.....

I believe the "dented" cover is only needed for the type 4 gear set, but imagine some could have made it on to other differentials, depending on what was in stock on the assembly line at the time of assembly. 

I'm sure someone here probably knows for sure.  ;)

I've heard that aluminum covers are a better choice..... Finned as well.

Thanks, we removed my type 2 and my buddy had a type 3 and 3.55 gears "In Stock" He wouldn't let me touch his Type 4 🤣 I doubt I'll ever change but good to know

But you notice there is no notch on your cover. The brake line clip wraps around the lip on the cover.

O.K.... Now I've got my glasses on. I see what you're seeing. 

Just to clarify, my 12 bolt is from a '72 El Camino which also had the "shock protection plates".

I can't see any other reason for the notch. It wouldn't be for clearance on the suspension bars, there's lots of space there. 

Funny though, only SS396 seems to stock the one with the notch....... Could be a "Chevelle" thing ????

 No more of an early thing. Gm revised the clip and added the notch.

No. Gm redesigned them. And they actually would be mixed and matched in cars that didn’t use the notch but the ones that needed it got it.
