Vaughn Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Has anyone here had much experience doing there own powder coating? I got one of the Eastwood guns back in 2013 and am finally getting around to trying it out, story of my life, lol. I ordered some of the rally wheel silver and did a test run. I am not sure if its close or green enough. I know its hard to tell from pictures but what do you all think I tried experimenting with some scrap iron and a few other things to get the hang of it and thank goodness I did. The first few pieces were a mess. I tried a gloss black on some 1979 Bronco rims, I lost my way and am doing a frame off on that but never again.😌 Back to Montes!!! 4 Quote
Rob Peters Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Vaughn, it looks very nice but I do have a question. How are you baking it onto the items you are coating? The reason I ask is I thought powder coating, it needs to be pretty heavily backed on. rob 2 Quote
Vaughn Posted March 8 Author Posted March 8 Rob, I have an old oven that I am using. You do have to bake it at 450f until it flows and the 400f for another 20 minutes. I am hoping that it will last longer than regular spray paint. 3 Quote
Dtret Posted March 8 Posted March 8 I just got an estimate to have the rims for my 70 sandblasted and powder coated. 100 per. But they don’t have the correct rally paint but they can do argent silver. Still debating as I have 8 spray cans of rally paint here from OER. And a sandblaster , I did blast the rims already. That’s as far as I got. 3 Quote
Vaughn Posted March 8 Author Posted March 8 That's what I have normally done Dennis. I just thought I would experiment with this. I'm just not 100% on the color outcome. 3 Quote
willie Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Looks good to me also! I think down here its $100-125 per rim. So everyone save your old stoves!!!! lol 2 Quote

Long before I had a welding rod oven, I put a bunch of stick welding rods in the kitchen oven at low heat to make sure they were dry. Some time later, the GF at the time was preheating the oven to bake something. Apparently, I had left the rods in there by mistake. Lets just say I needed to open up all the windows for quite some time, to air out the smoke from all the burned off flux... 1 7 Quote
Vaughn Posted March 8 Author Posted March 8 I have used our dishwasher to clean seatbelts, always when the wife is gone. The powder coating does smoke a little so I have a spot in my work shop for the oven. 3 2 Quote

Dtret Posted March 8 Posted March 8 I do most of my work in the basement as I don’t have a “ working garage “. Fridays I’m off work and she’s not, so it my “ sneaky “ day. I wait for it when she gets home, “ OMG what did you do in the basement today. lol. After an hour or so she gets used to it or it dissipates enough, then we wait for next Fridays surprise. lol. 3 4 Quote

cny first gen 71 Posted March 8 Posted March 8 I may as well use dishwasher for cleaning parts I don't use it for dishes 😅 I replaced it 2 1/2 years ago and have probably only used it a half dozen times. Living alone I don't have to answer to anyone 😁 4 2 Quote
