Leghome Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Any tips to make this process easier. I started two days ago and have only worked on it for about 2 hours. I am hating that I started tbis project but Ole Red has needed it done for several years. Luckily it is a 72 and not a 70. I have it laying on my cardboard covered table saw in the wood shop so no wood projects that involve cutting. I have some Simple Green solution mixed up and it seems to be doing a pretty good job but as I said I am hating this tedious task but can't afford to pay anyone to do it for me. We are having a new water heater installed later today so funds jut got tighter. Oh well enpoough of the rant and onto the grill and the start of yard work which is not as much fun as it used to be. LOL LOL 6 Quote
cny first gen 71 Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Not an easy task for sure, I spent hours on my 71 to get it where it is now and I decided to do the fins black instead of silver. I like the way it came out. But for sure a real pain, patience and being able to walk away for a while is a good thing. Good luck with it. 3 Quote
Leghome Posted March 11 Author Posted March 11 Thanks Steve but Patience is not in my corner anymore getting older and crankier LOL 3 Quote
420ponies Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Larry, when I did mine,I used pinstripe tape (different widths),and it was tedious (40+ hrs) , when I was done, but it came out pretty darn good for me.I always use etch style primer, then the argent silver, and I should have used a clear-coat after all said and done. It's held up pretty well (12 yrs). Problem was ,I had bought a grille out of Tennessee at the same time, and it looks better than the one I put so many hrs into!! I still have that in the attic, just in case! Patience is the name of the game. 3 Quote
Dtret Posted March 11 Posted March 11 The answer is , I’m sorry to say, no. It flat out stinks to do. 2 Quote

Scott S. Posted March 11 Posted March 11 I had a buddy that redid his '70 Camaro grill (egg crate) using an electric toothbrush (child sized head and with paste) and a Waterpik to clean off the residue... Turned out O.K., but he eventually had it chromed anyways. Quote
MCfan Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Hey, Larry, I don't know if any of the following applies to a '72 grill but I refurbished a '70 grill by carefully masking off all the chrome surfaces while exposing all of the front side black strips and the entire back side of the grill cells and brackets. That did take awhile, but it worked very well. I simply sprayed black gloss on the front strips and used bumper chrome all over the back, making sure to shoot from all angles to evenly coat all sides of every cell. It came out fine once I removed the masking tape. Some may prefer Argent Silver, but the Bumper Chrome really makes the grill pop! Good luck with yours. 9 Quote
Leghome Posted March 11 Author Posted March 11 That look good Dennis. I hope mine come out half that god. I dlike the idea of the bumper chrome. I wonder if that is similar to the rust-o-leum chrome I have? Quote
Rob Peters Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Larry, I bought one in Carlisle a few years ago to use as a backup grill in case anything ever happens to my grill. Yes, it is a 70 grill which is more complex due to the many openings that need attention. There is some issues with some of the areas which had started to pit on the inside of those little square openings. I got about 1/3 of them cleaned up using my Dremel tool with a flexible hand held attachment like a dental drill. It does a pretty good job on it and once I can get all of the areas cleaned up I will need to smooth them out. Once this is all done I will address the painting portion. The good thing is all of the pitted areas are inside the little squares taken care of. Just not sure when I will have a chance to get back to it with so many household projects always going on. rob 1 Quote

I did buy a detailing kit for dremel that has several different buffing like pads in it but have had other projects to get done while the weather has been warm. Redoing themstone around the circle drive, picking up the stone out of the yard from snow plowing9I am begging to despise the gravel drive), but I need to get back to it and stop procasternating 2 Quote
