I've already started a topic on new wheels. Now my question is 18" Aluminum or Old School Steel Rally Wheels?

Posted

It depends what you want for the car. Mine is completely stock so I kept the factory rally wheels in the original size. I depends what you like and what you want to do with your car. What ever you do please poet some pictures

There is a smorgasbord of stiles of aluminum wheels out there but just a handful that I’ve seen that I think works on our cars. That said, I’ve got the Rally’s on my 71 Monte and my 69 Camaro. But I’m old school. I also like the Cragar SS and American Racing Torque Thrust as an aftermarket period correct wheel. I also felt that the early 2nd gen Camaro 5 spoke wheel that Aaron(Canuck) chose for his 70 Monte was a good choice.

called on of our local tire/wheel stores with a well know reputation for working with older cars. They suggested using 245/45/18 with an 18" rally.

Wheels are a personal touch, go with what looks good to you . I got Keystone Klassics on my Cougar, Old School alum racing wheels on the Monte

I personally don't really like the bigger wheels on the older cars (others will disagree) mine has 15 inch aftermarket wheels I'm happy with them and that's what matters. You have to be happy with what you choose. That's the beauty of it though if you don't like them you can always change them. Of course it'll get a little expensive wheels like everything else have gone up.

That’s another option too. That may be what Joe T has on his 72. Maybe he’ll post a photo with a size.

I have 15" Cragar SS chrome wheels on my 72, as they were on it when I bought the car.

To me, 15" Cragar wheels or the 15" stock rally wheels look the best on our classic muscle cars, because they are period correct for the cars, and they add to the vintage/nostalgia look of our Monte Carlos.

I have only had 15” rims on my Monte Carlos but I do have 18” rims on my 1973 442. I haven’t driven it much since purchasing it so not sure if I will like the ride yet. I pick up the car from storage soon.

There are 17" versions of the "old school" rally wheels available. But personally, they just don't look right to me.

That being said, the wheels you choose are a personal choice, so it's what makes your Monte yours. ;)

How about past members car, April Sloof, does any of this work for you?  April's car was our Monte Of The Month in I think April 2018

I’d roll in that.

I think it is for sale if you are looking to add to your collection.  It is a bone stock Monte and we know you like the Stock look Monte's

Here’s is Ole Red with Ridler 675 17x8 wheels. I wanted something different than rally wheels because I got tired of seeing the same old thing all the time. Now I see these wheels all the time because I got tired of moving the rally wheels around so I sold them.

I have rallys and 18x9.5 Torque Thrusts for mine. I did run 18x8 and 17x8 staggered Torque Thrusts for quite some time too
