jbird72 Posted May 27 Posted May 27 So i have new pan and pickup to install on my monte sbc..can this be done without pulling motor. Not to sound stupid. By looking under without "diving in" it seems possible 1 Quote
cbolt Posted May 27 Posted May 27 The short answer is no. You will have to at least raise the engine for the pan to clear the crossmember and the crankshaft. 2 Quote
Grant MacPherson Posted May 27 Posted May 27 I have done it on small and BB. Remove fan and distributor cap motor mounts. I have a curved wooden block that fits the harmonic balancer that I jack the engine up from. You could lift it fom above as well. 2 Quote

So if i jack it up by balancer as yu state in guess in only has to go up a lil just worried wont line back up with mounting on motor mounts 1 Quote

DragCat Posted May 27 Posted May 27 Don't you have to solder the new pickup in place ? I would hate to have to do that upside down 1 Quote

They are pressed on, but moroso says to braze..but yeah under car lil challenging 2 Quote
jbird72 Posted May 28 Author Posted May 28 Can also use a brazing torch i guess thx again jft69z think 11 hours ago, jft69z said: A quick tack weld would be just fine. Quote
Leghome Posted May 28 Posted May 28 I would hesitate on using the harmonic balancer to raise the engine. I always use a block of wood under the oil pan, remove the bolts from the motor mounts and have a couple of 2 x 2 near to put between the motor mount pcs and have had no problem an a small block I do not know about the bb's. I had a friend who used his HB er and messed it up and dang near messed up the whole engine but others have done it and had no problems. I try to err on the causious side 3 Quote
John S Posted May 28 Posted May 28 I’ve done it the same way Larry has done it. Then rotate the crankshaft so that the timing mark on the harmonic balancer is facing down or in the 6 o’clock position that will reposition the crankshaft counterweights so you will be able to get the oil pan out easily. I recently removed the oil pan on my car. You should have no problem. John S 4 Quote

420ponies Posted May 28 Posted May 28 Just make sure you have a good engine stand. A 4 leg is what I prefer, since my last incident .That engine fell against my arm and my Monte! Saved the Monte, broke my wrist. Oh well, live and learn. I have done these inside the car, like Larry did, no issues. Just got to have room to work. Lining up the pickup is crucial (same plane as on oil pan rail). Just a tack weld will do. They tap in snug, just an insurance as to not vibrate out. Torque spec it out.And remember, plastic sleeve and oil pump rod go in from the bottom. Patience is the key. Take your time, double, triple check things as you go along. But like you said, pull it, then change things that need changed. Better off that way. Who knows, maybe a motor mount is bad? 2 Quote
