Chevyss
I'm thinking of replacing the camshaft in my 72. It's a 402/auto w/quad-jet and Eddie intake. It has 2:73 gears in it and A/C. I want some with a little lope to it just to accent the exhaust. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
72-CLASSIC_RIDE
Don't know if this info will help but here goes. When my 402 was rebuilt, this is the Cam that was recommended and is considered a mild street Cam. Just enough lobe to give it a little attitude. I have a TH400 tranny, 331:1 ratio rear axle, 4 bbl, Thorely full length headers and A/C as well. These are the numbers/info I took from the Cam when purchased a few years back & is flat tappet. wallaby
Figure on replacing the springs too. The factory springs are good for something in like .480, then they bind. Most aftermarket cams have more lift than that. New lifters are a must...and while you're in there, you might as well put in a new timing chain & gears. I ran one of these with good result: Lunati 10110702. They are using a new part numbering system now...it used to be PN 60202. It pulled enough vacuum to run power brakes and had a bit of healthy sound to it. It also made great torque and was very streetable. I wouldn't go bigger or you loose the "good" gas mileage and street manners. LOL. Your engine is smaller than mine also, so this cam will seem more aggressive in yours than it did in my 468. The next size smaller might be a better choice, https://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=2149&gid=287 and the info says it's ok with stock valve springs, but I never put in a cam without matching springs. I ran Comp cams stuff before this, and wasn't happy. I had issues with breaking valve springs.
Chevyss
Thanks for the information. Give me some ideas to work on and some research to do. The engine was just redone about 10,000 ago and I need to find out what cam was installed at that time. The car really runs great and I don't want to go to far and loose that. Just want a good lope when idling around town.
zmanabba
x2 on the Lunati I have the 10110702 in a 454 that is in a 1977 4x4 swb that is very fun with a slight lope. In a 402 it would sound really nice. But if everything else is stock I agree that the 10110701 would be better. There are a lot of guys running the 10110703 in 402's but they have all of the usual mods. David
Machtuck
Those Lunati cams are both excellent. I have heard the 03 in a 454 and it had plenty of lope. I have a crane powermax 272 216/228 .515/.510 112 in my 402. At 750 rpm and warmed up, it has a noticeable lope to the idle. Not like shake the car but " hi, i'm not a stock factory engine" you can hear the header pulse if that's what you are looking for. The cam has plenty of torque and with 8.7 to 1 402 .030 292 casting heads cleaned up, 1.88 exh valves, perf rpm intake, 800 worked rochester, 3:42 rear, 2004r/ 2400 conv went 13.90/ 98. Spinning the bf goodrich's. This is more less a daily driver with cold air and pwr accessories.
ClassicJJ
Would one of these cams suite my stock 1970 350/300hp well? I want to do a cam upgrade in my 350 because I'm installing a 2004r/2000 conv and 3:73's in the rear. When doing the cam I also plan to upgrade the stock intake, exhaust (headers run to dual) and carb as well.
gprimm
On specific recommendations for cams, I always call the cam manufacturer tech lines, let them ask me about the car details and then pick from their recommendations.
