How do you get the mirror out of the mirror base? I have a remote control mirror. I disconnect the arm from the mirror body. But I don't see how the mirror is held in place. Has anyone taken one of these apart? I want to make sure I don't break the mirror. It doesn't look like anyone makes replacement mirrors.

When you look at the back of the remote, you will see that the cables are crimped into slots. You have to spread these slots open to get the cables out. This area is pot-metal so you have to be very careful not to spread them to far or you will crack the pot-metal. I have done this so I know it can be done. I did break one slot, so I used some type of epoxy mix to glue the cable back in.

George,

I also plan to put a new mirror glass in as mine is pretty scratched up. I was told by a glass shop here that you can break the mirror, and unhook them from the other end. I definitely dont want to damage the remote mirror. You cant even get them as far as I can tell. Would you be willing to maybe meet and help me get it right? I am willing to bribe you with beer! Let me know. I'll send a email with my number. Thanks for the tip. I thought it would be dangerous to attempt to remove the wires from that end. I could see myself breaking the potmetal just as you described and then saying to myself I told you so.

I have never worked on one of those mirrors, but I'd be glad to help you out.

Thanks for the offer wallaby. I'll wait to see if George responds since he has done this before. I want to make sure I get it right. There's not much room for error. Maybe the three of us can finally get together and meet! The beer offer still stands (as long as you're over 21). What kind do you prefer George?

I decided to give up drinking years ago because I had a real problem knowing when to stop, but meeting is not a problem. I'll give you a call. I can't remeber what I used for epoxy "just in case". I must still have some somewhere. I'll have to look tonight. There are a few of us Monte lovers in Sac and I would love to have a small gathering here.

This is a factory right side remote mirror

that has to be dissasembled before rechroming. We did come up with solutions to this problem. Mark, don't forget to get a

controlling end from a wreaking yard to replace that bent piece. probably just about any GM car would be a donor and you can just

cut the cables as close to the mirror as possible as we discussed. Break the glass to remove like we did.

George,

It was great to finally meet you. I'll put another post up to get a date/time where we can all get together. Thanks for helping me figure out how to get the mirror apart (and still be able to reuse it). I did get out to the Sac. raceway Saturday night. My neighbor with the 69 Camaro made it to the semi's before he broke out with a 10.915 on a 10.93 dialin - bummer. He did win some money though. I haven't gotten the crimped ends off the wires just yet. Worked on it a bit tonight but no success.
