Guest Posted November 24, 2002 Posted November 24, 2002 Well I have a set of Boston 4x6 plates and was considering putting them in my dash,as the originals finally died. The car came with dual speakers. I have not taken anything apart yet and was curious if the brackets are attached to the speakers and can be removed? If not I can make some aluminum brackets I am sure. Also are there any precautions to take when removing the pad and do I have to remove the front panel and gauges? I see all the screws (I think). I have a lot of experience installing systems, I have a 600 watt Nakamichi system in my Cutlass. It is quite elaborate with amp rack, custom kickpanels, etc. I just don't want to do any damage to my baby. Just want to go with speakers in stock locations. Alredy have newer 6x9's in back. Any experiences out there? Thanks guys!
Guest Posted November 24, 2002 Posted November 24, 2002 GRANDPA,I JUST INSTALLED CUSTOM AUTO SOUNDS 1013 IN THE FRONT OF MY 70,THE LEFT SIDE IS VERY ,VERY TIGHT I HAD TO REMOVE THE ORIGINAL BRACKETS AND USE LITTLE L BRACKETS THAT CAME WITH THE 1013S I TRYED TO USE KENWOODS IN THE DASH AND THEY WERE TO BIG EVEN WITH THE LITTLE 1013S THE LEFT MAGNET HITS ON THE DASH CLUSTER
Guest Posted November 24, 2002 Posted November 24, 2002 The drivers side is where you run into real problems. I put spacers between the top dash mount which gave me a little more room. I still have to make a mount. The pass side is easier with a lot more room.
ejw71 Posted November 24, 2002 Posted November 24, 2002 There are six/seven screws that attach pad to dash. Upon removal of the screws pull the pad straight out. Six/seven clips hold windshield side of pad in place. Some of these clips may come loose/detached from pad. The speakers are small. Your 4x6s won't fit in same exact location as orginals. However, there is enough space in "under the pad area" for them. You only need to remove the dash pad to get to speakers. Guest Posted November 24, 2002 Posted November 24, 2002 Thanks everyone! So it is about as simple as it looks(?). I just wanted to know about the unexpected before hand. As soon as I get a new radio I will cahnge the speakers and post how well the Bostons fit.
Guest Posted November 24, 2002 Posted November 24, 2002 I put a pair of these speakers up front and the drives side was very tight. I had to use some custom brackets as well. http://www.infinitysystems.com/caraudio/product.asp?ProdId='KAPPA32%2E5CF'&Ser=KAP&Cat=MEL ------------------ My 1970 Monte Restore Pages LLOYD@FIRSTGENERATIONMONTECARLO.COM [This message has been edited by ADGTRUNKLID (edited 11-24-2002).]
wallaby Posted November 24, 2002 Posted November 24, 2002 Dash pad is easy to remove. All the attatching screws are along the upper lip of the dash cluster, and there are some inside the glove box also. Once you have the screws out, the pad pulls off with the same motion you would use to open a drawer. Spring clips are used to hold the pad at the base of the windshield. Once you get the pad off, you will see what we are talking about. The back of the gauge cluster gets in the way if the speakers have large magnets.
Guest Posted November 25, 2002 Posted November 25, 2002 Do you have to remove the winshield pillar interior trim? I'm going to use a woodgrain dash piece that I got that was already cut for a cd player so I keep mine mint, so I will do it all at once to make it easier.
