70chev Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Hey everybody! I got a quick question... took the Monte out for a cruise today, and when I shut it off the engine went off like it normally would, but the radio and the dummy lights stayed on;( like when the key is in the on position) but the key was in the off position. I restarted the car and shut it off again, and then it was normal. What might be the cause of this, is something going bad? Thanks, Wayne Quote
Paul Bell Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Your ignition switch is acting up. Change it before it leaves you stranded. Quote
70chev Posted July 30, 2019 Author Posted July 30, 2019 where is that located and where is the best place to get a good quality one? Quote
MC1of80 Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 I believe Paul is referring to the ignition mounted on the lower steering column. Not the key switch/cylinder. The parts place, ground up, Leo, ausleys, etc. A Chevelle ignition is the same. Just make sure you order the correct year. Quote
Paul Bell Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 If you have tilt steering, ACDelco D1405B. If you do not have tilt steering, ACDelco D1404B. $12.75 and $16. 54 plus shipping at rockauto.com It's on top of the steering column. Ya got small hands? Quote
70chev Posted July 30, 2019 Author Posted July 30, 2019 Do I have to pull the steering wheel then? If it's at the top of the column I guess I'm having trouble picturing where it is. I do not have tilt.... Quote
70chev Posted July 30, 2019 Author Posted July 30, 2019 Oh wait..... do you mean on top of the column at the base under the dash? Quote
MC1of80 Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Yes. On the bottom half of the column. 2- 5/16 screws hold it on. Quote
Paul Bell Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 If I had to do this job, or anything that takes more than 10 seconds under the dash, I pull the seat and lay down face up at the pedals feet on the back seat. Quote
Canuck Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 I just changed my ignition switch myself. I removed the two nuts that hold the steering column up and dropped the column. This gave me room to replace the ignition switch. If it is a column shifter you will need to remove the screw that holds the cable for the shift indicator. 2 Quote
70chev Posted July 30, 2019 Author Posted July 30, 2019 Very good! Where should I order one from that's a genuine GM? Any suggestions? What a local parts store carry it? Quote
70chev Posted July 30, 2019 Author Posted July 30, 2019 Surprisingly enough they had it on Amazon! thanks for all your help Paul I really appreciate!!! Quote
stangeba Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Aaron mentioned this "If it is a column shifter you will need to remove the screw that holds the cable for the shift indicator." This cannot be mentioned enough! You can snap the thin cable if not done. Quote
Leghome Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Snapped mine when I changed to a tilt column. Lucky I have the horseshoe shifter. Quote
70chev Posted July 31, 2019 Author Posted July 31, 2019 Thanks for all the tips I appreciate it! I do have a column shifter..... so good to know! Quote
