Hey Don, not sure what car / setup you have but when I got my 70 SS it had 2:56 gears in it. Stock 454 / TH400 and was fine for zipping around town. Never did any highway/interstate driving with it though.

I have 2.73 in mine from factory non posi, it's fine around town and on highway. I dont do a lot of burn outs or any racing. On highway does 2400 rpm at 70mph all day long.

I have 2.73 ratio in my 70 and it is a good cruising and highway gear. Great gas mileage but don’t expect to leap off the line or have quick acceleration. Most Montes had a 2.73 gear ratio.

Hey Don, just a few things from my recent gear swap. Make sure you know how yours is set up now. For example, I had a posi unit and my buddy had a 3.55 ring and pinion in stock he gave me. Well my posi was a series 2 and his ring and pinion was a series 3, luckily he also had a series 3 in stock. Also if you have a posi I would recommend adding a bottle of that GM posi additive with the new gear oil. More detail in the below thread
