Trans is out and shimming starter. I had to cut some shims to 1/4 the size to get the gear where it is now. The paperclip slides in with a little play but not much. I know its hard to tell with pictures sometimes because the camera angle is different. The picture Starter 1 (2nd picture) shows it best. Does this look close enough or do I need to bring it in so the paperclip is tight?

   Thanks

Looks pretty good to me. I had to play with all the starters I was juggling to get my motor to spin fast enough for the EFI to sync up. Yours looks pretty much how mine ended up, not so tight that it binds, and not so loose that there's poor tooth engagement that'll chew up the ring gear.

You know it’s been pointed out to me,several times, that the starter gear is softer metal than the flexplate teeth so as not to chew flexplate/flywheel teeth. I’ve chewed flywheel/flexplates and I still ain’t buying it.

I have had the same problem and replaced my flex plate when I had the engine rebuilt
