Noticed the driveshaft on my 71 SBC355 w/TH350, has a large round device at the front of the driveshift where the yolk attaches to the tranny. Is this a balancer or what is it? Is it needed due to the length of the shaft? Just curious....

Was this used due to the length of the shaft?

No, same length shaft as a Chevelle. Just something GM thought would give their new luxury car a nicer ride. Same idea as the rubber frame mounts on the tranny cross member.

ditto Mine had one too. With switching to the 700R4 the driveshaft I used did not have one. Can I tell the difference? Not really.
