I think I need to have my real main seal replaced. Does anyone have any idea how many hours a mechanic is going to hit me to change this? It has the 400 auto transmission.

it ain't going to be cheap

here's an idea what's involved...

disconnect battery ground cable

remove

starter, torque converter dust shield

drain oil and remove filter

remove engine mount bolts

lift engine

remove oil pan, oil pump, rear main cap

now I personally like to loosen all main caps to get the crank to drop a smudge, makes it much easier the remove the old seal and install the new one

clean the block and oil pan for new gasket

re-torque the main caps and install the oil pump, oil pan and new gasket, lower engine, install mount bolts, trans dust cover, and starter

new oil filter and fill the oil, connect battery cable

I'll bet a minimum of 6 hours labor

I have done a small block in my sons truck in a afternoon. It is not that hard life you take your time. Use the felpro one piece pan gasket.

Sam, I was always under the impression that you could access everything by pulling the transmission. Is the way you described more efficient in your opinion?

If the engine has a one piece rear main seal it is possible to replace the seal by removing the trans in some cases. Your 402 has a two piece seal in the rear main bearing cap.

I understand mike. A friend of mine does mechanic work. He said he would take care of it for me.
