Droff Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Does this statement hold true for a '70 Monte? "A 2 series carrier is a car that came with 3.08s or lower from the factory (i.e. all of your 2.73 cars). A 3 series carrier is a car that came with 3.23s or higher." My assumption is that I have the stock 12 bolt with 2.73 gears and at some point I may want to get lower gears, something shy of 3.73. I've seen references to 2 series and 3 series, but wasn't sure how or what determined the designation. Quote
dbreese Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Hey Drew, IIRC 2 series carriers are just that. 2.73 and I want to say the even had like a 2.56 gear or close to it. 3 series is 3.08 up to 3.73 but you can purchase a thick ring gear set in 4.11, 4.56, and I think 4.88 that will fit a 3 series. Droff Posted May 16, 2014 Author Posted May 16, 2014 David, DOH! I should have been able to make that connection but I guess it went right by me. Would I be able to put 3.XX gears in a 2 series carrier? Quote
Droff Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 Resurrecting my post... Out side of 70-72 Monte's and Chevelle's (maybe?), what rear ends would fit under my '70 in order to run 3.XX gears? Any Chevy's from the 80's or 90's? Thanks. Quote
Sam (Bones) Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 cuttlas grand prix, lemans, GTO, skylark 68-72, in 73 the axle housing changed some you can run a 3.xx gear in any axle with the correct carrier Quote
Droff Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 68 - 72. Does that include Chevelle's on that list? Thanks Sam. Quote
7tonemonte Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I have a 72 camino one in my car. Don't know I it helps you at all Quote
72MC Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 I believe the only 2 series 12 bolt carrier that could accept a 3 series gear was the 12 bolt TRUCK carrier. If memory serves me correctly, a truck 2 series 12 bolt carrier could accept up to a 3.07 gear. 3.08 is definitely a 3 series carrier item and is a passenger 12 bolt gear. You could also use ring gear shims to use series 2 gears on series 3 carriers. I don't personally like them but some people do. - Dave Quote
Droff Posted January 28, 2015 Author Posted January 28, 2015 Any Ford 9" users and is it doable without a ton of money? http://joplin.craigslist.org/pts/4867005853.html Quote
Droff Posted January 29, 2015 Author Posted January 29, 2015 After some more research on my part, the Ford in my link above won't work regardless, as it is a 5x5 bolt pattern. There may be other reasons, but I stopped once I found that. Quote
Droff Posted January 30, 2015 Author Posted January 30, 2015 I ran across a '71 Chevelle 10 bolt with .308 gears in it, non-posi ($250 - and local). This should be a 3 series carrier that I could run some lower gears in, correct? Most likely 3.30's would be my choice, strictly street. I currently have a 12 bolt under my '70 with no reason to think I don't have the typical factory 2.73 gears but I have not verified yet. Any reservations with a 10 bolt? Quote
Sam (Bones) Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 I would spend the money and build the 12 bolt with a posi, I would first verify what's in your 12 bolt "before" I did anything, can you get the axle code off the front side of the passengers side axle tube and look it up without taking the cover off Quote
Malyc Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 http://westerndiff.com/wordpress/ Try these guys, they helped me get a 3 series carrier for my 10 bolt, very friendly and good service. I'm not sure if they have carriers for the 12, but I'd imagine they would. They ship too! Quote
bigscaht Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 dont do a 10 bolt..rebuild the 12 bolt you have... Quote
