Scott S. Posted February 9 Posted February 9 When I did mine, I used a Dremel with the fiber wire wheel to clean up the inside chrome housing. Turned out O.K. Cleaned and painted the outers with a plastic compatible Tremclad grey/silver that looks nice. As for the lenses, I couldn't get the cloudiness out of the plastic, so I painted them on the insides with a Testor's model paint I had for painting the signal lights on a few kits I'd built. It's a brush on application, but I think it turned out alright. 1 Quote
Rob Peters Posted February 20 Posted February 20 I headed up to my storage garage today to see what I am going to take up there to make a list of what I will need to take up there to drain the gas tank and drop the tank to replace fuel sending unit. My other project is to install new speakers in the front in preparation of installing a new radio. I installed the two new speakers.... Thanks to Frank O'Connell for topping me off on where to order the front speakers. It is hard to find the dual front speakers that fit our cars without altering the speaker mounting brackets. These speakers come with the special mounting brackets already installed so they mount into the same speaker mounts. rob 3 Quote

They were very helpful over the phone. I got this information from Frank O'Connell. He got his front speakers from them but he got his rear speakers off of ebay. I also ordered my rear speakers from Electro Tech. The mounting holes in the rear speakers align up perfectly with the rear speaker grills rob 1 2 Quote

Rob Peters Posted February 23 Posted February 23 Today I fought with my Monte some more. Something I hate to do is removing the rear seat, not only the bottom but also the rear seat back. It had been awhile since I removed one of these and it was just as hard today as it has been in the past. One issue on getting the rear seat bottom out, if the front seat is still in the car, is I am more ton-age impaired than I once was. So once the rear seat bottom and back were removed I removed the rear quarter interior panels which allowed me to pull out the package tray. I had bought a new one a few years ago and never quite had the energy to go through this just to replace it but since I am installing new speakers I felt it would be a good time to take care of the replacement of this package tray. Since I have the light monitor system I needed to remove the bezel for the rear tail/turn signal lights and license plate indicator from the old one and install onto the new package tray. Once that was done I moved on to the rear speaker wiring. My car originally only had one rear speaker and since it could have been ordered with dual speakers in the rear I ran two new speaker wire runs to the back. I did not want to use the original speaker wire because I did not want to disturb the original harness. With all of the needed interior panels removed it was easy to run the new speaker wires from the front to the rear. So then it was on to removing the original radio so I can install the AM/FM radio. Removing the radio knobs and the nuts holding the stems were easy to do using needle nose pliers and hemostats were a piece of cake. I had wanted to remove those two stem nuts before removing the rear radio mounting screw because I did not want the weight of the radio putting too much pressure on the radio mounting towers in the dash So on to removing the rear mounting screw, piece of cake, right. Wrong, It had been a long day and after fighting to get access to that mounting screw and I gave up for the day, leaving that final screw for another day. If anyone has a suggestion for accessing that mounting screw I am all ears/eyes. I am not sure if removing the ash tray assembly would allow better access or not. After I get this screw out I can install the AM/FM Radio and start reassembling the interior. I want to thank Frank O'Connell for his tips and also thanks to Dennis Tretter for providing me with the 70 only speaker grill a several months ago and more recently sending me another rear speaker cover, speaker bracket and flat nut used to secure the speaker cover. 4 Quote

Another chore i am not looking forward to. That said, there is a certain amount of pleasure working on your car and seeing that work pay off. The thing I have the most trouble with is finding the energy to start on a project. I don't hate working on cars, unlike Joe T who always says he hates working on cars but for someone who hates working on cars it seems it is hard to get him out of the garage. rob 3 2 Quote
