How much base and clear did it take? 2 coats of base for coverage, I added two more after fixing some stuff. 4 coats of medium-high solids clear, so there should be more than enough to cut out the trash and peel. 1 Quote

I have never painted a car; you did a great job. rattle can pro is all I am. wanted to give you a fine pat on the back. you should be very proud. both my 70's are black. I'm hoping maybe one day I'll be able to shake your hand fellow club member. you are making your First Gen very proud today indeed. I'm sure your fellow members would say the same as I Thank you! This is my first time painting so of course it's not going to be show car quality, but I built it as a driver. 1 Quote
S.Maug Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 impressive Cody. Guess there might be some hope for me then! Quote

Blackhawk Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 About 64oz per coat, about two gallons of mixed clear. 1 Quote
S.Maug Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Yes, I was wondering the same on materiel and costs these days. Quote

S.Maug Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Thank you, Cody. Swell job Nothing like a fresh paint job ! Quote

Blackhawk Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Yeah, it's definitely not cheap to do. I went through more primer than I should have because I was learning as I went, but I'm a bit north of $2k in primer/paint/consumables and about the same for compressor/gun/respirator. We didn't skimp on the tools because there's enough projects to be painted between my dad, my wife, and me to stay busy for years. 6 Quote
S.Maug Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Yes, I didn't remark on the prices cause we all know that story. 2 Quote

When I did my 72 11 years ago I spent over $2500 on paint and materials and that was with a thirty-two percent discount. 4 Quote
willie Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 As much as i dont like the patina look, that might be the way to go. Holy Moly!!! 1 2 Quote
Marks71 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Well I was hoping to hear less than 3k, so you didn’t disappoint. Of the 3 cars + 2 pickups I’ve painted, the last one was around 1981, using the common siphon feed gun. Everything done in a 2 car garage. I think Gravity feeds came shortly after. Materials have changed since then, so if I do it again, there is research to be done. What with fluid tip sizes, PPE and techniques. Definitely have to get a gravity feed. Ive been working off and on, on a 64 Buick Special Deluxe to use as a driver. Have to be careful not to get too upside down on it. It would be completely different if it were a Chevelle. Back in 91, I worked out a deal with a painter that allowed me to do all the prep and priming on my 84 GMC crew cab dually. I brought it to him blocked and stripped of all trim, and had the bed removed along with the front windshield. I also did the jambs. Got a smoking deal that way, but with no guarantees. Still looks good to this day. Might have done it all myself but the color was silver. Not an easy color to do. Probably never find another painter to agree to do that again. 2 Quote
S.Maug Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Back in the day, 1980, I bought a 73 monte Carlo. Paid 400.00$. Rusted terribly, and I do mean terribly. I Never Painted but proved my bodywork skills had promise. will find before and after pictures when I get back home. anyway, performed the bodywork in a barely heated garage month before Christmas. My buddy painted it for me in his properly "sorta" garage. Enough for the paint to do what it needed anyway. no more room than yours! Labor=just two good friends Kitty Hair, Rattle can primer and materials from farm store== 65.00$ 1 gallon half froze electric blue paint======65.00$ let sit for a week to dry It turned out better than anyone would expect. Even my friends! 1 Quote

Respiratory protection is a must, the hardener in clear coat can be nasty stuff. A cartridge respirator works, but they're only effective for 8 hours of air exposure before they stop protecting. The white hose in my pictures is the supplied air system that I use instead, the nice thing is that it's like having a fan in my paint suit. They're not cheap, but they're great if you don't have great airflow in the painting area. 4 Quote
Marks71 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Yes, when I used to sandblast I had filtered incoming air which creates a positive pressure within the hood. 1 Quote
Scott S. Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 The guy that did mine has one of those "vacuum" mediablasters..... No dust, no mess on the floor..... Works great. To bad he didn't let the filler cure before he sent Montelishi out for paint. 1 Quote
420ponies Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 My experience with "paint" was enough for me to have a forced air respirator style. We were spraying Herculiner on the top and bottom of my floorboards,( like 8 pm that night ) .My paint guy was doing the spraying. After about 30 minutes out of the booth ( fans still going), I walk in, without anything on my face, walk underneath and out the door. About 2 am that next morning I call him a ask if he is having trouble breathing, Nope. Well, I on the other hand , had a raspy voice , and could barely breathe for about 4hrs. So now I know what COPD people go through and it's not by any means. These new paints have a lot of after effects on a person. Read the labels on your additives !! 3 Quote
Canuck Posted August 21, 2024 Author Posted August 21, 2024 After 28 years of hearing my 1970 trunk lid’s signature squeak when opening and closing it, I finally lubricated it on the weekend. Today I opened and closed the trunk. I’m not going to lie… I actually miss the sound. It felt very strange not to hear it. 4 3 Quote

Scott S. Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 Unwrapped Montelishi this morning.... They're calling for "light showers" today. And with the upcoming water restrictions, I'll take all the free car washes I can get. 1 1 Quote
72 Monte Carlo Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 I pulled the original 1972 headliner out of my Monte to get ready to install the brand-new headliner and headliner insulation. I already have the windshield and back window removed, so it's the best time to get the new one installed. Then I can install the windshield and back window before it gets ready to be completely repainted. 5 Quote
