My Air Force son is replacing the main rear seal on his SBC.  He sent me these pictures.  The rear main bearing seems fine with me as the wear pattern is good in the center / bottom.  It is just the "black streaks" on the side that I question.

The crank looks fine also with no scratches.  He said it is nice and smooth.

Just needed another opinion.  It runs fine and doesn't burn oil, just was losing lots of oil out the rear seal.  It is 7 years old and he said it fell apart in his hands!!!

I would not.reuse that bearing, while the pan is off I would roll a new set in it

I agree with Sam on that bearing. Also, as long as you have it down that far I would check all of the bearings and even pull the crank out, take it to a shop and make sure it is true. Something had to cause that damage....maybe the cap was installed with too much slop in it.

:dt  Bearings are cheap peace of mind. Be sure to check your clearances with plasti-gauge before re-assembly.

Your already down this far might as well make it right

Replace bearings for sure.. Ditto on the peace of mind as well! Nothing sucks greater than having to do it all over again. Well besides the snowball effect.
