Rob Peters Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 My original 1970 Monte Carlo was painted Desert Sand (Paint Code 63) When I bought my car late in the 1970 model year I had my choice of three cars their Demo Monte, and two others. All three of these cars were identical and all three painted Desert Sand. In the 17 years I have been a member of this club I have never seen another 1970, unrestored or restored, painted in Desert Sand. I have seen Gobi Beige (Paint Code 50), Champagne Gold (Paint Code 55) and Autumn Gold (Paint Code 58). Is it possible the Desert Sand was a rare color for Monte Carlo's? Has anyone else ever seen a Desert Sand Monte? Green Mist Code 45 is another what seems to be a rare color. All of the other 70 colors I have seen frequently. That said...... First Generation Monte Carlo's look good in any color (almost). rob 2 Quote

Rob Peters Posted March 22, 2017 Author Posted March 22, 2017 I know this is a very poor picture, in reality it is a picture of a picture. This is a picture of me with my original Desert Sand Monte Carlo. rob Quote
JK's 70 SS Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 I'll say my car is not desert sand - where can I find the paint code? VIN# maybe? Quote
Rob Peters Posted March 22, 2017 Author Posted March 22, 2017 I'll say my car is not desert sand - where can I find the paint code? VIN# maybe? I have listed all of the 70 Monte Codes on your other post where you posted pictures of your very pretty 70SS. Check it out there or you can go to our home page and click on the link for "Technical Information" and from there not only will you see the colors and codes listed but also a color chart. rob Quote
JK's 70 SS Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 50 H - Gobi Beige _ (looks a lot like Butternut Yellow) - thanks for the additional information..JK Quote
MCfan Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Rob, my SS is Autumn Gold paint code 58 as shown on the Build Sheet. It has been repainted but with the original color. My first new '70 was also Autumn Gold but had a white vinyl top like the one shown below. Quote
72MC Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Rob, from the pic you show it appears to have some "rose blush" in it. Kind a reminds me of Black Hills Gold which has a Rose tint to it. - Dave Quote

That said, it was a very classy looking color for a Monte but like I said, the First Gen Monte looks good in almost any color. There is only one original color I really don't much like on a Monte but I will not say which year the color is from or what color it is.... It is a personal like/dislike thing. rob Quote
Canuck Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 For all the Montes I've seen at meets I've been to over the years, I don't recall ever seeing that colour. Quote

MC-71 Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 I have a Desert Sand 1970 Monte sitting in front of one of my garage doors. Had it for years. Was going to be my second restore but never got to it. Has Gold interior. Carl 1 Quote

My father purchased it in 1972 with 18,00 miles on it. He loved that car and took meticulous care of it. I took possession when he passed in 2015. I put it in several shows a year. And have had multiple other MC Gen 1 owners comment how they've never seen on in Desert Sand in person before. I've been told by many that it was in fact a very rare color for 1970 Monte Carlos. 3 Quote
MCfan Posted August 15 Posted August 15 I can't speak to the rarity of Desert Sand '70s, Anthony, but I think I have seen many more Autumn Gold '70s, possibly because I have previously owned two in that color and am more familiar with it. In any case, you certainly have one beautiful '70 Monte and I think the Desert Sand is actually a more pleasing combo with the black vinyl top! 1 Quote

I agree on the Desert Sand.....it's super classy looking with the black vinyl top. I grew up in this car. Driving home from Street Machine Nationals in Minneapolis, I turned the 225,000th mile on it. This was the family road trip car until I was 15. It has made 4 round trips from Iowa to California. One trip pulling a U-Haul trailer filled with our posessions as we moved from Iowa to Southern California so my father could finish his Masters Degree. Before we had the MC, my dad had a 1970 Chevelle SS, 396, in Autumn Gold w/ black interior. Quote

Scott S. Posted August 15 Posted August 15 Weren't these shades reserved for Montes that were destined for the big screen ??? The colour gave a nice contrast to the villain's dark shaded Blue Ovals.... Quote
Rob Peters Posted August 15 Author Posted August 15 Anthony, your Desert Sand Monte is beautiful. and having almost a quarter of a million miles on her is quite an achievement in durability and good maintenance. Mine did not have a vinyl roof. Thanks for sharing some photo's. rob 2 Quote

Scott S. Posted August 21 Posted August 21 If my memory serves, the one that appeared in "The Good Guys" is that colour.... Quote
stangeba Posted August 21 Posted August 21 I don't remember where I got these but I did work for DuPont Automotive finishes in Troy, Michigan so I assume I got them from work and made a scan of them years ago. 2 Quote
