John S Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 Is the lever on a tilt column where the backdrive rod for an automatic trans, or reverse arm on a 4 spd connect, the same for auto or manual or are they different. I think they are different but not sure. John S Quote
1970mcss Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 John, I just bought the column from Mike B, he said that his car was a manual and I re-installed it in my automatic floor shift with no problem so I think they are the same. Maybe someone else can confirm. Quote
Mike Brichta Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 They are in fact different. The automatic arm is longer then the manual arm. However, as John stated above, I have used an automatic column in a manual car and the rod worked fine. I'm not really sure why they are different Quote
MC1of80 Posted February 10, 2019 Posted February 10, 2019 John, is this what you are talking about? The first pic is of my 71 402 4 speed and the second is of my 71 402 auto. Both tilt columns. Quote
John S Posted February 11, 2019 Author Posted February 11, 2019 Thank you for the pictures you can clearly see the difference. Yes that is it. My standard column looks like your first picture. Have not bought a column yet, but there are more automatic tilt columns available than 4 speeds. It may work, I don't know for sure. If not I have a wire feed and a torch I'm confident I could make it work with some mild fabrication. John S Quote
Jared Richey Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 I have a few 4 speed floor shift straight columns but no tilt. Definitely a difference but doesn't really matter. I also have some FS Tilts when you get ready for one. Some of the other GM interchangeable columns have a more 4 speed like Arm but longer. Ex.. 2nd gen Camaro. Still rare in tilt although all were floor shift Quote
