Should there be a Vin next to the CRN suffix?  I thought there would be.

Hey Don, I just had the same issue. Check by your oil filter, there is a block running vertical next to the oil filter. That's where I found mine.

Love the CRN!!!

The VIN stamping is not as deep as the other codes so could be filled with paint. You may have to wire brush it to see the numbers.

Welcome to the site!  As Willie noted, the partial VIN was not always on the pad by the head.  It can be next to the oil filter.  The partial VIN was used for warranty purposes, so it should definitely be in 1 of those 2 places.

Supposedly since so few SS Montes were made there not 454's on the Monte assembly line.  So very often the motor was added later in assembly and the vin# added at that time to the vertical machined surface by the oil filter.  My car was built in CA plant and that is where my vin stamping was.

So, My question is ......did they make a 454 for the 1972 Monte Carlo? I going to go and see one. What am I looking at when I get there? LS5?post-259-0-06116300-1484180397_thumb.jpg

For 1972 it is simple. There will be a W in the 5th digit of the VIN.

They had the LS5 in 1972 Montes. Note that if it is also a Custom, it is very rare combination.
