I am not so sure guys!!   NOT about the 70SSs as i don't have one of these. But on the 71SSs i have to check, i know the 2 with black interior have black columns and wheels. On the sandalwood interior Tom and Kevin are saying it should be black but i have to check tomm and let you guys know for sure.

Joe i am crying i am laughing so hard!!!

Ok i checked on the last 71SS that has sandalwood interior, it has a black column and a black wheel. However its the wrong wheel, it has a wheel in black like the pic Dennis put up and i know she is supposed to have a black NK4 according to the build sheet if i remember correctly.

Bottom line Tom and Kevin are correct!!!

seriously why aren’t the gauges chrome trimmed?

This question perplexed me so I tried to research it and I still don't know 🙃 But I did run across 2 (one pictured) where the gauges arent chrome trimmed. So I'll ask the experts why not. Was it an option ? I know before I got it the front turn signal lenses where amber (el camino) because nobody had the clear glass during the rebuild.

Well, the pic is a hodge podge Mark.  Lol.

71 steering wheel and 70 headlight knob. BUT if you look close to the right side turn signal indicator you can see the remnants of the chrome surrounding it. It was probably  worn off during many years of cleaning.

Thanks Tom, I'll just assume mine has just been cleaned too many times 🤣

It’s interesting you noticed that. The only thing not chrome trimmed on my 71 is the turn signal indicators, the high beam and the break light indicator. Other 71s I’ve looked at aren’t trimmed either.

You are correct. From the factory those 4 smaller circles were not chrome. All other guages had the chrome. It was not optional.

I remember doing the parking brake.

I forgot to reinstall the wire to the switch and drove several miles with the parking brake on one time!

When I worked at DuPont automotive paint, we had a primer that we called "black dip" and it was a perfect match to the original low gloss that was on these items. Good times.............

Like eating an elephant... one bite at a time...  Looks good.  If you have more information about the paint to share that would be lovely as the only replacement I have found is the eastwood underhood black another FGMC fan shared with me.

My parking brake assembly was not fully painted, just the bottom section that you could see when sitting in the driver's seat. I duplicated that but used a gray paint so it wouldn't rust again. IMG_0314.thumb.JPG.0d276c6c6516b9d0c31dc7b71f5c578b.JPG

I am gonna guess something like this! 😀  Mine was soaked in an electrolyte solution with a battery charger for about 4 hours to remove the rust before painting.

My 1970 was the same. They only painted what they needed to.

Wow, this is quite the story!  Since I'm relatively new to the club, I had not read all the posts.  I went back from the first one and read through the last!

Dennis you are amazing and committed!  Out in Wyoming, we don't see cars with this much rust unless they are transplants.  I can't imagine even looking at something like this and thinking I could restore it.  Wow, wow and wow!

BTW, my wife and I are almost empty nesters (4 months, 20 days, 1 hour, 20 minutes and 3 seconds until freedom but who is counting).  We are selling our house and taking our RV to tour the Eastern US for a year.  When we have a chance to look at different areas, we are going to buy a piece of property and put a shop on it while we live in our RV.  Then I can move my project cars and really concentrate on restoring them.  One of the places we are interested in is Bellefontaine, OH.  We have good friends that live there.  Sounds like you are in the vicinity.

So just after I put up the last post, I downloaded pictures of a 1967 Olds Toronado that I just purchased.  It has been sitting outside in our dry Wyoming weather for who knows how long.  Although there is certainly surface rust, I don't expect to find rotten trunk floors, floor boards or rust in the fenders and rear quarters.  Thank goodness for desert air!

I'll put it in a storage building in the next few weeks and then work on getting a title.  Not sure if this will be a parts car or a restore.  I saved it from a fate worse than death - demolition derby fodder!

Thanks Nathan. I’m not really in to this much rust either. lol. But it is a true SS car so it won’t get there just really slow. I have to pinch my pennies wisely. I believe that’s about two hours north of me so yep pretty close.

Well I kicked Adam’s car out of the basement and put it in the tent until it warms up a little. Then I cleaned the basement.
