Roger OrtizJr Posted March 29, 2024 Posted March 29, 2024 How do we decipher our cowl tags. I've had my Monte for 4 and 1/2 yrs. I've done some small projects on the car. I noticed when I bought the car that the cowl tag and vin # are different. Also the number on the front of engine block has been milled off except for an "H" and it looks to possibly be last letter.LOOKING FOR HELP. THANK YOU. Quote
Canuck Posted March 29, 2024 Posted March 29, 2024 Here’s some decoding pages. Note that the last 6 digits of your VIN are not going to match anything on the body tag. https://www.firstgenmc.com/forums/index.php?/resources/decodingbodytag/ https://www.firstgenmc.com/forums/index.php?/resources/decodingengine/ 7 Quote
Glen Posted March 29, 2024 Posted March 29, 2024 Hey Roger, dumb question…do you know if the motor is original to your car? Means a lot if you plan on using the link Aaron provided to (possibly) make that determination. Good luck! 5 Quote
Scott S. Posted March 29, 2024 Posted March 29, 2024 Wasn't there another thread on the site that determined that an "H" stamp meant it was a factory replacement ?? Quote
RichG Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 Factory Replacements were coded CE for Chevrolet Engine along with a number that correlated to the warranty claim. The number itself had nothing to do with the car per se, just the warranty claim. Quote
Korey Posted February 11 Posted February 11 I’m trying to decode a body cowl code. On the third line I have 10A 059142 10001. What do they all mean? Thanks in advance Quote
Rob Peters Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Korey, Welcome aboard the boards. We hope you like what you see here and decide to become a full fledged dues paying member, there is a ton of great information here on the site and a lot of very knowledgeable people. It may be a little better if you could take a picture of your trim tag so we can properly. Also tell us what year your Monte is. rob 2 Quote

Thanks in advance Welcome Korey! We do have some pretty good resources here, below is a link to decode the trim tag. There's also paint codes, engine codes, etc in the 'Resources/Technical Info section. https://www.firstgenmc.com/forums/index.php?/resources/decodingbodytag/ It helps if you list the year of your car as there are subtle differences. I tried looking at your profile, but you must have checked the box for 'Select All' when choosing the year/engine car you own. Every vehicle available on the list was shown under your profile. EDIT: I was typing this out as Rob was also answering, lol. 1 Quote

I just bought the car and would like to find out all I can about it. Would love to redo it. The whole interior is going to have to be completely redone. Not really alot of rust considering it was parked under a tree for twenty plus years. I was expecting the floor pans to be rotted but to my surprise they aren’t. Not alot of rusted out spots thankfully. Unfortunately it doesn’t have the original motor and not likely to have the original transmission but I couldn’t pass it up for the price and I’ve always liked the body style Quote
jft69z Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Your car is a 1970, looks to be built at the Van Nuys plant. Also came with black vinyl bucket seats (757), Cortez silver paint (14), with black vinyl top (B). Built the first week of October (10A). The rest of the numbers on that line are data processing numbers, not a lot of info there. A lot of other good resources on this site too: https://chevellestuff.net/qd/tags/1970/vn/vn_decode.htm https://chevellestuff.net/tech/articles/trim_tags/tt_1970.htm https://chevellestuff.net/tech/articles/trim_tags/tt_1970.htm#vannuys (I rotated the picture too) 3 Quote
Dtret Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Pretty nice car based on the tag. Nice colors and buckets too. 1 Quote

I couldn’t find anything about the other numbers on that line. How do I figure out what motor and transmission is supposed to be the car Quote

How do I figure out what motor and transmission is supposed to be the car The body tag has no information for the engine/trans. Unfortunately, for 1970, the VIN doesn't have that info either. A build sheet would be best, or if you can verify the engine/trans have matching numbers to the VIN (last 6 digits or so), you can then get the 3 letter engine code to see what it is. That can be done anyways, to see what that 3 letter code comes back as, and identify the engine. https://www.firstgenmc.com/forums/index.php?/resources/decodingengine/ Quote

Dtret Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Adding to what Joe posted is—- on a 70 engine code will be on the flat pad on the block behind the alternator ( where the head and the block meet. The vin will be down by the oil filter. Later years it was all on the pad. Quote

I would love to find out what it was supposed to have so I can get it as close to original as I can. If not my buddy has a 454 that I can buy to put in it but would like to figure out what is supposed to be in it. I really do appreciate everyone’s help and information. Pretty awesome group of guys 1 Quote
