Is the transmission and rear end still in and original?

Not always the case but in most circumstances a 10 bolt rear end and a turbo 350 would dictate a small block. A 12 bolt rear end and a turbo 400 would indicate a big block. But remember any of the combinations could be special ordered. Remember also the only way to get a 454 was with the SS package and there would hopefully be tell tale signs of that.

Look at the end of the steering shaft, at the steering box. Is it one piece,  or does ot have a clamped on flange?

One solid shaft - small block

Clamped on flange - big block

Left one is big block

You can take pics of the engine bay and gauges and show us and we can get pretty close to what it should have!!! These guys are good!!!!

Yes, since it is a 70 and the code is 10A, that would be the first week in October of 1969 since by October of 70 they would be turning out 71's.

They are both in it but not sure if original. I’m assuming and hoping the rear end is. Would be nice if the transmission is too

Then it's a small block car, most likely a 350. Doesn't mean you  still can't put that 454 in it though.

I’m really starting to lean towards the big block. Painting it the original color with some craters. I think it would be a sweet looking car

Korey She is yours you do what you want. I agree that you try and keep her as original as you can but if she doesn't have an original engine, trans, or rear. What's the sense, do what you want!  I also like to keep mine as original as i can but the last one i will do will not be all original.

Count the number of bolts holding the cover on the back of the rear end. Will be either 10 or 12. Here is the pan for a TH400 transmission. If the pan is square with a clipped corner then you have a TH350 transmission.IMG_2833.thumb.png.4be37f94ddac99b681147ba7f45e1f39.png

For the transmissions, Regarding the transmissions, they are completely different transmissions. The Turbo 400 is larger, longer, and heavier than the Turbo 350 and was designed to live behind higher-torque applications such as big-blocks. That doesn't mean the Turbo 350 is weak in comparison.  The TH400 is the stronger transmission. It's built heavier and larger than the TH350, with heavy-duty applications in mind. Even later versions of the TH400 continued to focus on handling high-torque, high-horsepower inputessentially, the TH400 is a more robust transmission for heavy towing or high-power engines, while the TH350 is a lighter, more efficient option for everyday driving.

The 12 bolt,( like the th400 trans is to the th350 trans), is a heavier stronger piece than the 10 bolt. GM made a variety of 10 bolts over the years. Some not so good, the ones in our Montes are not those. There is nothing wrong with a stock 10 bolt under normal driving conditions. They can be rebuilt to be considerably stronger though. If you’re lucky enough to have a 12 bolt, then good for you. Especially if that 454 you’re thinking about using gets dropped in and you’re planning on tearing up the streets.

She’s a diamond in the rough but alot of potential. Really good shape considering it’s been sitting in the dirt for twenty plus years. I still can’t believe I found it and got such a good deal on it

I see it started life as a column shift car and the console and possibly the buckets were added later.

The trim tag code said 757 though, which would be black vinyl buckets. Maybe the console added later?

Yes, didn’t see the trim code, that’s why I said possibly the buckets because I wasn’t sure. But I would think the console for sure.

Yeah, I don't know if you could get buckets without a console. Anyone know?

Heritage Center documents show it as a line item, RPO D55

My pos 70 was buckets and no console when I got it. But it was a Flint car so no real proof. It did have the gear selection on the speedometer like his does and no console mounting brackets on the floor. But it does have the correct bucket seat brackets on the floor. Proof enough for me.

Trim tag should say what the seats are too.
