Has anyone ever deciphered the Tire Code on a Build Sheet? This is from my 70.

Tire Code.JPG

Box 106 on your sheet may have tire information in it as well.

Looks like the same info as in box 93, at least in the 'Build Sheet Decoder' disc I have for 70 SS Chevelles. They only list 14" tires, but it appears to be the same info from a few of the different build plant sheets.

Below are samples from a Van Nuys sheet, but they were the same for the rest listed (Atlanta, Kansas City, Baltimore)

Perfect! Got it. W/W = White Wall probably.  Thank you.

That's what I would guess, BUT...the decoder shows W/S as white stripe. Maybe they mean a thinner white stripe, like the red stripe tires vs. a thicker 'white wall' like we're used to seeing?

None of the other plant sheets show W/W in their breakdown, maybe it just wasn't offered on a Chevelle in 1970, I don't know.

Build Sheet from my 72 shows the info in Box 90

Different plants, different years, probably plays a big part in the build sheet decoding. We've seen that when trying to decipher other things in the past.

My old 72 build sheet from an Arlington plant doesn't show tires at all in the boxes above, just below in the RPO code section.

Tire info is also shown in that location on my Build Sheet.

I am trying to think if I recall any MC's with stock white walls

I'm looking thru the GM Heritage sheets. They say G78 & G70 x 15" bias ply white stripe in the description, under tires (1972).

the 1970 info package wasn't really specific, from what I saw.

On Monte Carlos, G70x15 red stripe was available as code P91.  Very few cars were ordered with red stripe tires, as most came with the white (3/8 inch) stripe tires. The G70x15 red stripe tires were listed in the 1970 owners manual as well as the service manual and the salesmen's order sheet.

I meant to say that most SS 454 cars came with G70x15  white stripe tires. Non SS cars came with G78x15 dual white stripe tires.

Checked the 70 Brochures and found the following tires. Wonder if the double strip is considered the White Wall, and the single is the White Stripe?

My ‘70 from Van Nuys has a different code in Box #93.  Box #106 looks to be the same as the others, though.

My 70 came with the tires designated as W/W

Dave, check my post below. I am wondering if the dual stripe tires are the W/W tires that are listed on the build sheet for my 70.

The Salesman's order shows:

G78 15 Fibreglass white stripe PU8

G70 15 Fibreglass white stripe P90

G70 15 Fibreglass red stripe P91

(The G78 15's are dual white stripe)

Dave, does the Salesman's order show any tires that matches up to what the Build Sheet on my 70 shows as W/W?

The order sheet description is not always the same as the build sheet. Your build sheet indicates that your car was built with the G78 15 dual stripe white walls.

Dave, thanks for the reply and info. I was unable to locate any specific info about what the W/W build sheet notation means. Your info that W/W means 2 white stripes makes sense
