Mike Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 Hi Folks, i searched for cowl hoods on this website but only found custom made ones (WHICH LOOK GREAT). Wish i had that talent. Has anyone tried the Gold Star hoods from Jegs? I bought some Taiwan built metal inner fenders a few years ago from Leo Konik to replace the old plastic ones and they fit perfect, so I am hoping the hood fits. They have 6 different hoods on there, seemingly all the same other than functional or non functional. One is offered from Restoparts, but it could also be a Gold Star. Also, anyone know the weight of the old hoods? The cowl hood has some extra metal and is likely a bit heaver, concerned about the springs. Also Also, does anyone have instructions on how to line up a hood? I failed miserably after pulling it off with an engine swap. Then i went to two body shops and they both screwed it worse. Now its got a dimple and a wave, hence my interest in changing. I plan on getting new hinges or having mine rebuilt as well. Im thinking they are original to my 1970. Thanks all. Mike 1 Quote
Blackhawk Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 I bought the functional Jegs branded version of the hood. I'm pretty sure they're all made by the same place, the box for mine had the Goodmark part number on it. The packaging isn't great, and I've had to do some work to the scoop where it was damaged (this is hood #3 or 4, the others were sent back). Make sure the hinges are in good shape before trying to align it, the hinges are supposed to be lubed on a somewhat regular basis and that usually didn't happen. I used Willie at https://www.hoodhingerepair.com/. If they're original you may have the heavier springs, it was a 1970 only thing. 2 Quote

Not good news about shipping damage. I guess I need to see whats covered. If its dented, its going back. I never had a cowl hood car. Did you put a spacer under the carb? Quote
cny first gen 71 Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 I used Willie Wilson also top quality job for sure and GM springs to boot. I'm 100% happy with them. As far as the scoop I built mine I didn't like the look of the ones out there. Scoop was to long or to short for me. Just my personal preference. Quote

The work that I did to knock the lows up and smooth them out is still a lot less work than I was planning with the OEM hood from a Chevelle. Quote
Dtret Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 I honestly wouldn’t think the repop hood would be heavier. Most likely thinner metal, the metal that’s removed is just replaced by the cowl and you loose a lot of the factory heavy bracing replaced by lighter bracing to allow for the cowl. Just thinking. 🤔 Quote
Blackhawk Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 The aftermarket hood was around 100lbs. I found a spot where there was only one layer of metal and it measured in at 20 gauge if I remember correctly, so pretty close to stock. The inside of the hood has the multiple layers to isolate the cowl induction area from the rest of the hood underside. Quote
502ci Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 I put my stock hood on a scale and from what I remember it was 80lbs. I remember it being 80lbs. because I was thinking "wow" that's like a 80lb. bag of cement, lol. Quote
DragCat Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Check out GlassTek for cowl hoods....Ive heard good things about their product. If I remember correctly, the weekend is a blur 🤣, They will work with you on sizing the cowl. https://glasstek.com/chevrolet/ Quote

cny first gen 71 Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 I should have weighed mine but I forgot, it's heaver with the add on scoop. That's another reason I had the hinges redone too. 1 Quote
