Last fall i purchased a 1972 monte carlo,  it originally was a texas car and was built in the arlington, texas plant.  the build sheet shows it was equipped with a 350 4bbl engine, a saginaw 4 spd and a 12 bolt open rear end.  many people have doubted the authenticity of this car but i think they are wrong.  i have the build sheet, the car is hurst equipped and has hurst badging.  it was also ordered with bucket seats and a central console.  so.....either all my documentation is incorrect or i have an ultra rare factory 4spd 1972 monte carlo.  does anyone have info regarding this...?

thanks..!

Welcome to our group Jim.

Can you post pics of the build sheet, as well as the VIN, and cowl trim tag (located under the hood, right behind the power brake booster). That's the most logical place to start this journey.

If you need help with pics, let me know and I'll help you.

Welcome to the club, Jim....

Seeing as you have the build sheet, it would be interesting to know who the original owner and dealership that sold it were.

G.M. execs could order "one of" cars, and manufacturers could get specially build "demo" cars for aftermarket parts promotions.

Plus there were G.M. dealerships, such as Yenko, that took cars and added their special touch, not to mention race teams that ordered cars for Nascar.

Like I said, i'd be interesting to find the history of your car..... More paperwork is always better. ;)

Scott.

Welcome to the site Jim like Joe said check all the numbers to make sure they match up to build sheet.  If you post photos someone will help decode. Talked to another guy at Syracuse nationals that also has a 72 4 speed I think he is from Cortland area be very rare to have 2 in the same area.

Welcome James, when you get back with the info Joe requested, it shouldn’t take long to sort this out. Hopefully the top right corner of your build sheet is still intact with the numbers.

Note that the base model 1972 Montes came with a manual Saginaw 3-speed. These were column shift.

Are bucket seats and console both listed on the build sheet (separate lines)?

I couldn’t find a suffix code for 350 4 barrel manual trans for 72.

Yeah, there isn’t one. In 1972 the only engine available with a manual trans is the 350 2 barrel (with 3 speed Saginaw).

According to all of our records there were no 4-speed manual transmissions built in 72.  Also, you speak of Hurst badging but I have never seen or heard of Chevrolet ever putting Hurst badging of a First Gen Monte.

Please either post pictures of the build sheet and also photo's of the Hurst Badging. If you are unable to post pictures here you can email them to me at rob29ford@aol.com

We are always looking for some of these odd ball cars.  Still looking for a documented 4-speed SS454.  Also still looking for a documented First Gen convertible Monte.

The guy Bob and I talked to said original owner had a story that was the car was ordered with 4 speed but when they were building it put a 3 speed in so was pulled off assembly line and then put the 4 speed in so who knows what build sheet says ( not sure if he had it) . I suggested he check all the numbers on car to verify. Hopefully he'll join up maybe we can find out, he and his wife sounded interested. Seemed like very nice people.

But only the 350 2-barrel, not 4 barrel. Interesting that they say 3- or 4-speed. Note that the 4-speed was not available in 1971 with a 350 2-barrel.

I agree, no 350 2 barrel 4 speeds in 71. I see that now in 72 only available in the lower HP ( 2 Barrel) I was getting excited to see a 72 4 speed. Lol

FB_IMG_1722132953499.jpg                                                        Oh yes, I saw this car and dropped a card off to it. Must be that "Carolina Blue" Jared was talking about. Notice the radiator top cover ? '72 3 bolt style  Non A/C car. Looked pretty original . I did see the floor shifter, but thought someone had added it.  Think it's a 2 bbl carb. on it ? That car sure was polished up for the show!

Almost forgot. Welcome Eugene to the Club!! Sounds like your Monte is a rare one. Could it have been installed at a dealer and badged up with the Hurst Equipped badge? I thought the dealer's were the only one's with the badges available back then. Boy, to find an invoice with that on it would be nice to have. Need to see some pictures of it. Joe T can help you out on getting pictures on to the boards here. Just click on his avatar and send him a message. Again, welcome to the FGMCC !! I do know back in the 70s if you wanted any of the badging for a hurst olds you had to show proof of ownership to order. I've never seen a Monte with any Hurst badging.
