So, a buddy of mine posted on fb his new "1968" Monte Carlo. I said "68??? No such thing, 1969 was the first production year for the 1970 Monte", ...so I thought.

He said according to the VIN it is, I asked what the 6th digit in his VIN is, it should be 0, 1 or 2...again, so I thought. He says "8" wtw??? Am I wrong, someone fill me in please.

Yup... That's not an '86.

Is he reading the vin in the window or the I.D. plate on the cowl ?

If he's taking the number from the plate, which is actually a letter designating the assembly plant. he could be seeing the "B" as an "8".

Just a thought.

P.S., Welcome to the site. :)

Even the models produced in the fall of '69 are designated as '70.

He is mistaken as there is no such thing. Maybe it was built in Baltimore and he’s reading the B in the VIN as an 8 like Scott said. The body tag on the cowl will have the 2 digit year on it.

Probably were Monte Carlo's in 68, but probably made of clay.

Baltimore car sounds like a more than likely answer.

Welcome Miss Tracy!!!!   As others said there were no 68 on the road (yes maybe made of clay at this time).   Tracy ask your friend to send us a pic of the trim tag, like Scott!!   We would be more than Happy to break it down for you guys!!!   By the way the Monte looks Great!!!!

The very first production Camaro rolled off the assembly line on Sept. 29th, 1966...... There were several "display/show" models built that spring just to get the customers interested.

Hey Willie....

In '68 John D was messing around with the Gran Prix re vamp When Chevrolet decided they wanted a version too. But Pontiac took presedence and that's why the Monte Carlo didn't appear until late '69.
