Twister John Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 I am currently considering a purchase of a 70 SS Monte. And need help determining if the engine is correct & possibly original. Thanks Vin # is 138570L17523. Date on Trim tag is 03A. Block is stamped T0107 CRN. I 2 Quote
1970mcss Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 The CRN code is correct for the 70 454. The T0107 is the plant it was made and the date. Do you see any other stampings that match the vin??? Decoding Engine - First Generation Monte Carlo Club (firstgenmc.com) 6 Quote
Canuck Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 CRN indicates it is a 1970 454 engine for a Monte Carlo SS. T0107: built at the Tonawanda plant Jan 7, 1970 03A: the car was built the first week of March. So far that info adds up but you should still look for the partial vin on the engine block to see if it matches the car. 6 Quote
70white402 Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 It’s on the side of the oil filter housing. 1 Quote
Dtret Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 Jeff is correct. But it’s small and hard to read and usually covered in road grime. While you’re down there check the numbers on the transmission also. There’s a black tag , and also there’s a flat spot on the trans case, in the middle right above the pan. Your partial vin should be there as well. There is a section on the site telling you what to look for on different things that were on the SS. Good luck. By the welcome to the group. I hope it works out for you. By the way I was born and raised just north of Minneapolis. ( I was going to say grew up but that hasn’t happened. lol. ). 3 2 Quote

Twister John, If memory serves me correctly, all Van Nuys built cars like yours (and mine) DID have the partial VIN stamped on the pad above the oil filter. And like Dennis mentioned, it’ll also be on the trans case. Not the best pix (especially the trans as it looked like it was struck at an angle - but still visible), but here’s where you should check: Good luck, it sounds promising as you’ve described… 1 Quote
