Tonka Man Posted October 8, 2024 Posted October 8, 2024 What is the difference (besides the look) of the vertical stripe option for the interior and the button style? I bought two '71 cars this year and one has the buttons and one has the vertical stripes. From what I can tell, they are both very similar cars as far as options other than one has a vinyl top and the other has a painted top. Quote
Rob Peters Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 The blue interior in the first picture, both the seats and the door panel are from a 70 interior. The green one with the buttons are from a 71/72 interior. The seats would also have the buttons. Another difference in the door panels between a 70 Monte and a 71/72 would be the map pocket in the door panel on the 71/72 because the 70 Monte did not have this map pocket. rob 6 Quote
Tonka Man Posted October 9, 2024 Author Posted October 9, 2024 Humm. I'll have to check the VIN tag and door tag. My title says '71 on the blue one. Could a car built in late '70 have the vertical stripe interior but still be registered as a '71"? Quote
Rob Peters Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 I would be very surprised. Do you know when your car was built? Look at the trim tag, take a picture of it and post it or send it to me and I will decode it to see when it was built and interior that was installed. rob Quote

They do a complete changeover before they start producing 1971s. It’s not uncommon for someone to have swapped an interior from one Monte into another. 4 Quote
Tonka Man Posted October 9, 2024 Author Posted October 9, 2024 Here is the VIN tag for the one in question. I think it is a 1970 after all. The title is wrong. I had a VIN inspection done and I had to apply for an uncontested title. Somewhere some wires were crossed it looks like and the title is incorrect. 2 Quote
cny first gen 71 Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 What does the windshield tag say, pretty sure that's the one that counts. 2 Quote
Tonka Man Posted October 11, 2024 Author Posted October 11, 2024 I'm pretty sure I misinterpreted the year on this one. The VIN starts with "70" also. Quote
Tonka Man Posted October 11, 2024 Author Posted October 11, 2024 Speaking of stock interiors, has anyone come across an interior in a Monte like this one? This looks like something Mopar would do. This is from a car I parted out years ago. I was in Canada and I'm sure it is a Canadian car. As I recall, the exterior was a copper or burnt orange color. I don't have any reason to think this seat was re-upholstered but maybe so. I still have the front and rear seat out of this car. They are really rough but good cores. Quote
Dtret Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 Sorry. But yuck. I would assume recovered. It does have the 70’s vibe. But again, yuck. It’s not a slip over cover? Quote

It's rather difficult to imagine using that color choice in a Monte Carlo. I too would have to imagine that it's been reupholstered. As previously stated... YUCK. !! Now, that's just my opinion 😂 Quote
Tonka Man Posted October 11, 2024 Author Posted October 11, 2024 Mike, Your image did not come through. Did you find something with that style? Thanks for the info. I'm going to have to dig it out and look at it closer. I saw that it was stitched into the perimeter vinyl bead so I just assumed this was a stock option back in the '70's. I've seen some really wild interior options from GM, Ford and Mopar from that time frame. Quote
Scott S. Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 Looks like something you'd use to make a polyester leisure suit out of.... 1 Quote

Jared Richey Posted October 23, 2024 Posted October 23, 2024 It's funny to me that GM basically Re used 1959 Cadillac interior styles in our Monte Carlos. The 70 had a more plain series 62 style and the 71 72 had a Coupe Deville wide pleat with buttons style. Look it up you can't unsee it. Now the Caddy was much more fancy but the size of the pleats and the button placement are so similar Quote
