What is the trick to getting the cover off of the dome light of a '71?

Nathan i think you just squeeze it where the tabs are!! Maybe someone else can confirm this but i think that's how the cover is removed.

Willie is correct,it has three tabs that hold it in squeeze it and it will come off. If it's original it may be brittle and crack.

I found even some of the ones you buy "new" are brittle. The replacement I got for my '70 cracked when I installed it.

There is a grey ring around the top that is close to the headliner and then the "clear" plastic part that is inside that.  Do I squeeze the grey ring or the clear lens?

Clear lense. The grey part is screwed to the roof.
