Whether it is day2 or original there is no wrong way to restore a car If you take your time Remember it is your vision of said vehicle. I start project with a bare frame but when I look at the frame I see the completed restoration Just my 3cents CDS Alain🙂 My opinion is well known on this subject. The definition of restoration is to return to like original condition. Anything else is a rebuild. My opinion of course. It’s all subject to debate. 3 Quote

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in those numbers. Basically something to use as a comparison, especially since those springs could be used in many different actual applications, with varying weight differences. 2 Quote
Scott S. Posted October 31, 2024 Author Posted October 31, 2024 Joe, I was comparing the same Moog springs on different suppliers websites. Same spring, different specs..... 1 hour ago, alain boileau said: 🙂That is the beauty of the hobby we get to all express our different visions Alain🙂 Alain, Had Montelishi been a "numbers matching" or even close to one, I probably would have got the restoration route...... But that wasn't my luck. Scott. 2 Quote

I notice the sag when driving it the way it is now. Like the feel of a raised rear. Hey, Scott, I realize I am late to this party but I did a rear spring swap on my '70 SS (several years ago when I still owned it) that achieved exactly what you may be looking for. I went with the Moog 5379 rear coils. I have attached photos that show the direct comparison of that coil with the factory original "BM" coil and also show the end result which is a modest "rake". The wire size (.56" vs .54" dia) and external dimensions are similar, with the exception of the free height. As confirmed by the photos below, the free height of the Moog 5379 is 14.75" versus the free height of the factory BM coil which is 13.08". The difference of roughly 1 3/4" is plenty to result in a modest rake (unless you have something non-stock on the frontend). With the extra length, the new springs don't exactly "fall" into place, but they are not difficult to seat with a small pry bar. When swapping coil springs the two factors that make the most difference in ride height (static load) are free height (in) and spring rate (lb/in). I could not find a spring rate spec for the 5379 but it should be similar to the stock BM coil which has a spring rate of 130 lb/in, especially since the wire diameter is similar. All of this is to say that the result of swapping a Moog 5379 for your stock rear coil is going to be about the same as the difference in the free height or something less than 2". If you are hauling significantly variable loads in your Monte (passengers and/or trunk cargo), you may need the higher spring rates of the Moog progressive cargo springs also mentioned in this thread (158 lb/in for the CC507 and 175 lb/in for the CC501). Note that they both have the larger .61" dia wire size but their free height is quite different, 12.63" for the CC501 and 15.38" for the CC507. Those specs suggest that the CC501 will be closer to stock height while the CC507 should result in a rake greater than even the Moog 5379. Good luck with whichever way you decide to go. 4 Quote
Scott S. Posted November 1, 2024 Author Posted November 1, 2024 Hey Dennis, thanks for getting back to me. I was looking at the 5379's, but wasn't sure if they'd make any difference over the stock ones. The pictures give me a better idea of how they look. 👍 James (420ponies) said he'd send me his old ones when he switches over to air, and you can't beat the price. Seeing as my "toybox" has a permanent residency in the trunk, I'm thinking the stiffer cc507's might be the way to go. Not that there's any interference (yet), I'd like to get a little more clearance on the back tires as well. Again, Thanks for the info...... It helps a lot. Scott. 3 Quote
