I am trying to decipher the year and date code of this Rochester carb. The numbers i know aren't the same set of numbers on this carb. I have been told and checked my book to prove but i keep coming up blank. This particular carb is supposed to be a 1970 Rochester so i would think the numbers on the pad should be 7040200.

However the stamped numbers on the pad is 29231  0029   these are the only numbers on the pad. There are other numbers on the mid section of the carb, but they are not stamped, they are molded when poured, so i don't think they are influential to date code.

Tkx in advance!

I’ve looked and talked to different people and couldn’t come up with a solid answer for you. I even looked in Cliff’s Rochester carb book. Maybe someone on the corvette forum can look to get ahold of Lars.

Some codes on Rochester are different. They follow the Julian calendar with the first three numbers being the day 1-365 of the year example 0309 would be the 30th day of the year of 1969 January 30, 1969. I believe your numbers being 0029 comes back to January 2, 1969.

I agree with you on the date numbers, but what are the other numbers, do you know?

I don’t know what the other numbers are. Usually there are two letters also on the carb which from what I understand are simply a customer code.

Ok everyone, i think i have it figured out. Thanks to a club member much smarter than I, Jim Boczar!!!!   Jim had messaged me saying that the "70" is missing in the front of the numbers. The numbers that were on the carb (told by the owner) read 29231 0029, so it makes sense if you put the 70 in front the number now reads

7029231 0029. Now it is correct, and also the date code is right. Translate to a 69 caddy built Jan2, 1969. Between Jim, and the book chevy by the numbers it all worked out!   However the carb is no good for our Montes so i didn't purchase it.

Thanks to All for the help, and of course Jim for thinking outside the box!!!

Told everyone, you learn something here everyday!!!
