I found what appeared to be the correct power steering pump for my 71 SS. I did a test fit before I clean and paint the pump to make sure it bolts up correctly but the return line points out toward the driver’s side wheel vs pointing down like it should. The line comes out of the pump in the correct location but doesn’t bend the proper direction. Do you think I could successfully have that return line bent to face downward?

Aaron, I believe you could heat that up a little bit and then you should be able to slowly shape it to the desired point.

Or, it'll kink or snap off...😄

Honestly I don’t think it will make it. You have to bend it opposite of the current bend. That’s a lot of rinse and repeat.

I'm thinking that just using a longer hose and wrapping it around to where you want it to go would be the best option.....

It would also give you a bit more fluid volume in the system that way, which is a plus.

It's should turn down 90 degrees right out of the back of the pump.

It's a steel line and won't bend easily.

I have a couple of correct restored pumps which has a new shaft seal.

I'm assuming it's a big block car but from your pic it's hard to see if you have the correct lower mounting bracket.

The upper bracket is a 1970 bracket.

Just have your original rebuilt.

The one that was in the car is not correct which is why I went on a hunt for one. Here is what was in the car.

The one in your car is generally for a later year.

It's interesting that your mounting bracket is for a 1970. The 1971 bracket has a lug welded to the end for a wrench to pull on for adjustments.

GM figured out that some so called mechanics needed this revision to stop some from  crushing the side of the Reservoir with a bar or screwdriver to pry against the block.

Cardone remanufactures original pumps for your car.

Good luck.

You can get the proper one from Rockauto at a reasonable price. I buy a lot of stock parts from them. You just have to make sure you are buying the correct part. Hope that helps.

Getting parts from the US costs us so much money North of the border (exchange, shipping, broker fees, etc) which is why I’m trying to source one up here. Finding the correct one locally is proving to be harder than I expected.

Sorry I didn't realize you were in Canada. I could buy it for you from Rockauto and ship it to you. And I think you could pay me with PayPal.

If you want I can look through all my stuff and see what I have.

Hey Aaron, I found Early Birds out of Barrie, Ont has fairly decent rates..... Depending on how much you're buying. :)

Aaron, other than a purely not-quite-stock appearance, is there any functional reason you can't connect to it as it is? It does not appear to interfere with any structural member or other steering components. It must have functioned okay with that orientation in its original installation.

As you can see in the photos below, my stock '70 pump return exits in a short downward pointing tube which was a challenge to route back forward, especially with a short length of hose.  I wanted to install an inline filter anyway so I ordered a two foot hose (part number shown in photo) and inserted the filter in a secure and handy place within it.  Still, I had to notch the edge of my Parts Place plastic inner fenders to feed the hose over the frame rail.
