Robnhood Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 I am thinking about swaping my steeringwheel for the sport wheel which I believe was an option. Any recommendations on where to buy? Quote

Any recommendations on where to buy? I got mine from muscle car central, I think. I'll look when I get home. Makes a difference if you have tilt wheel or not, as far as the installation kit. 3 Quote
jft69z Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 It came from 'Camaro Central' (same outfit actually). In the description, it mentions the Monte Carlo as the larger wheel (lower link), but in measuring my NK4 wheel, it seemed like the 'smaller' one was a better match. The drop down box gives the option for tilt wheel or not. 15" O.D.: https://www.camarocentral.com/1967_1989_Camaro_NK1_Small_Comfort_Grip_Steering_p/ste-94.htm?srsltid=AfmBOooBEeEJ2fyrA5tM6gTm2XLMmbYtvoG5pDSdczyem5CbiIl-cY5- Larger wheel - 16" O.D.: https://www.camarocentral.com/1967_1989_Steering_Wheel_Kit_Comfort_Grip_Large_p/ste-94a.htm 3 Quote
Chevy Dave Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 If you want to stay original, note that the 70 sport wheel is three spoke and in 71 it changed to a 4 spoke. . 3 Quote
Canuck Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 Jared Richey in the club sometimes has factory original sport wheels available. They are much nicer than the reproductions but you have to watch for original ones that are sticky. I have a GM factory original cushion rim wheel on mine that is tan/gold. It is the same style as the black Chevy ones but it was for a Buick GS. I liked that it was a close match to my interior so I installed it with the Chevy horn button. 10 Quote
Michael Boyte Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 I'm with you Aaron, I too believe that the tan/gold wheel looks much better with your interior. The black would have stood out and not blended in nearly as well. Quote

I like that wheel too Aaron, and had considered that since my interior is 'Dark Saddle', but the car has a black steering column. I didn't think it would have looked right with the Tan rim & I wasn't in the mood to pull the column to spray it, so I just went with the black rim. I still like it better than the 4-spoke NK4 rim though (the one used on Vega's & Chevettes, 😁). When I had the car apart, I was almost going to spray the column Dark Saddle, but the original was black, and everything I could see for '72 was black as well. Also, at the time a black NK4 steering well was going on, so I decided to just keep it as original. Had I known about the padded Tan wheel at the time, I would have gone that route right from the start. If you can't find an original Tan rim, they also offer that in the repro world: https://www.camarocentral.com/1967_1989_Steering_Wheel_Comfort_Grip_Tan_SM_p/ste-96t.htm https://www.musclecarcentral.com/Steering-Wheel-Comfort-Grip-Tan-SM-p/ste-96t.htm Here's the horn cap mod I did: https://www.firstgenmc.com/forums/index.php?/topic/19368-new-guy-here/page/36/#findComment-253276 Here's the repro wheel, with black column: 6 Quote
Michael Boyte Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 Regardless of the color of choice, that certainly is a really nice steering wheel . 2 Quote

kpcsgasp Posted December 26, 2024 Posted December 26, 2024 Bought mine from OPG then Had it leather wrapped by Craft Customs out of Tx. Had the stitching match the body color. then took a page out of jft69z and did the horn button. A bit spendy but I really like the results. 8 Quote
Michael Boyte Posted December 26, 2024 Posted December 26, 2024 The stitching to match the body is awesome 👍. Very subtle customization ! I love it, no one will ever have a steering wheel that is exactly like it, and at the same time that exact steering wheel would be very appealing for any muscle car as well . 3 Quote

I like the horn cap because it carries the stock tradition (not that mine is stock) that there no bowties to be found on the stock car. 2 Quote
stangeba Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I like it! I ordered my 71 with this option but in 71 the center was the Chevy Bow TIe. Picture from 2009, This young man, now 16, drove my Monte for the first time Thanksgiving 2023 11 Quote
