Rob Peters Posted January 8 Posted January 8 If you haven't been following the news, the people in southern California are in danger of huge fires. These are not fires mostly up in the mountains but yes in the mountains too. These are along the coast and being fanned by 100 mile per hour winds. People trying to flee are ending up abandoning their cars on the highways making some of the major roads impassable so the government is having to clear these abandoned vehicles with bull dozers so fire and rescue vehicles can get through. Fire companies are sending trucks from Nevada, Oregon and Washington state to help battle these fires. We have 7 or 8 dues paying members in Southern California but not all of them are in immediate danger but that could change with winds as high as they are and the National Weather Service does not see the winds subsiding any time soon. I reached out to a cousin who lives in LA, says he's good right now, but it all depends on the winds. Hopefully everyone manages to come out of it safe, with minimal impact or loss. willie Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Thoughts and Prayers to all of the Cali residents, no matter where they are. That wind is no joke!! I am hearing a lot of bad stuff as to how that State is run, and they even cut funds to the Fire Depts. I even heard some Fire Hydrants had no water!!! Please, Please, Please bless all of those Fire Fighters and First Responders that have to go fight those fires without the tools they need!!! 7 Quote
Marks71 Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Currently they’re 4 fires in LA county. The worst is in the Pacific Palisades which is on the coast where the real expensive homes are. Of course there are no inexpensive homes in So Cal. So far more than 1000 structures have been lost between the 4. I’m up in northern LA county about 45 miles north of them, in a rural area that’s classified as a zone 4 fire zone. Winds were really heavy yesterday but aren’t so severe today, but they are beginning to pick up .We are in the flight path of the aircraft doing the water drops that load up at an air field about 15 miles north of us. Fortunately I'm pretty adamant about keeping my property clear of brush and debris and keeping any trees trimmed up at least 7’ from the ground and I have no trees within about 75’ from the house. Embers can travel for miles with these winds though. A bill was passed by the voters to allow additional funding for firefighting equipment about 4 years ago. A watchdog group has just reported that 0$ have been allotted so far. Our state is definitely not run by the sharpest tools in the shed. Point taken Willie. 2 1 7 Quote

420ponies Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Reminds of the fires they had in Hawaii . Nothing to stop the devastation. Last time out there, I saw the burnt remains of houses lost up close and just can't believe the underbrush just waiting for a spark to start it off. Same way that year in the Grand Canyon , Arizona area. 4 Quote

The news this morning was reporting on looters breaking into the homes of the thousands of people who were told to evacuate. They interviewed a guy who stayed behind in his neighborhood to protect his neighbors homes from looters. 4 2 Quote
