MC Firstcar Posted January 19 Posted January 19 I’m sure it’s been asked before but could not find any specifics. Anyway, I have just made plans to go to the eastern meet which is a five hour drive and my 71 Monte has not been rained on in almost 40 years. The rear window (vinyl top) has leaked ever since I purchased it in 1977. I’m looking for any advice on sealing it myself or would I be better off taking it to a body shop? It’s not a show car, but I do want it to look as nice as possible.Thanks guys.😎 2 Quote
Leghome Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Take it to an automotive glass shop and have them check it out. My 72 leaked like nothing I have ever seen water poured in in a heavy rain. No rust out but the bottom of the glass had come loose all across the back and started up the sides. Had it resealed and no more leak 3 Quote
Dtret Posted January 19 Posted January 19 I agree. To the glass shop. Have them check it and if it’s definitely a glass leak have them pull it out clean the glass and channel and install. 2 Quote

Tonka Man Posted January 20 Posted January 20 Originally, the rear glass was only installed with a butyl seal which does dry out over time. I talked to my glass guy because I was having the same issue. He said he could take out the glass without breaking it and reinstall with urethane. Then it would seal up nicely. My problem is that I have rust at the bottom corners of the rear window from long exposure to the elements and because it was a vinyl top car. When I do the body and paint, I'll have those patched up and then I should be golden! 1 Quote
B-Man Posted January 20 Posted January 20 @Tonka Man, that there is a can of worms, haha!! Ask me how I know that (see link below). And @MC Firstcar, the link to my post below also mentions the 'rear window kits' sold by the crew at Rust Replace. I havent dug into it yet, but its EVERYTHING one might need to take an old rear window out and put it back in. You might see if your glass guy would benefit from having one of those kits when he does the job. 1 Quote

And yes, Tonka man, my corners have some rust as well, but I’m not sure to what extent since everything is still original. And B-man, I will definitely check into that kit as it looks like money that would be well spent. And it’s good to know they have kits for the front windshield as well. Mine doesn’t leak that I know of, but as I mentioned, it has not been rained on in almost 40 years so I may have the glass guy pull it as well. Thanks guys! 1 Quote
