Chris shipley Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Is any left around you.. have you taken a classic hot rod to one recently. The one we have much different from when i was young. No speaker on window. Tune in with your radio. Quote
cny first gen 71 Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Yes we have one near by, I went there for a fundraiser when the wind blew the screen down. It is back open again but no speakers hanging on windows I guess you have to tune the radio to the correct station. That won't help in me because my radio don't work. 1 Quote

Marks71 Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Nothing within about 80 miles from me. California is #5 for functioning drive ins. Which makes sense. After all we have the weather for them. There is still only 15 in the entire state though, down from 220 at the peak. Increasing property values pretty much killed them. In my old stomping grounds we had around 9 within less than a 20 mile radius. After the speakers went away there was just a wire with a small pad that clipped on the antenna mast. For those of us that had the antenna in the windshield there was a tab attached to the wire that slipped under the windshield trim that would let that same pad rest on the windshield. Of course you had to have a working radio. 2 Quote
Canuck Posted March 30 Posted March 30 There’s one about 2 hours from me. Another one that was 4 hours away just closed for good last fall. The last time I took my Monte to a drive-in was about 20 years ago. The movie Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry was playing that night. 3 Quote

Back in the day we would bring a keg to the drive-in inside someone's van, charge $5 a head to enjoy as many solo cups full of warm beer as a teenager could handle. One of the guys I went to high school with worked there, and the password was always "budco bash three" to get into the movie for free and join the keg party. Ah, the good old days. 2 1 Quote

It was only after we snuck my friend into the movie in the trunk of my '66 mustang to see Escape From Alcatraz and The Groove Tube I heard the Cheech and Chong bit where they go to the drive-in and they mess with the guys in the trunk. Classic comedy right there. "Wow man. You drive just like Steve McQueen" 3 1 Quote

502ci Posted March 30 Posted March 30 There several still near me but have not been to one in years let alone taken my Monte. They had a drive in I used to go to called Memphis triple, closed in 2006 I think. It has FM stereo back then to listen to the movie. Used to watch two movies then turn the car around and/or move the car closer to one of the other screens without going into their section, then tune the radio to that movie station and watch the late night replay of those movies. That was back in the day when we could stay up late without falling asleep, lol. 5 Quote
Canuck Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Some guy did tell me once that they could sneak a lot of beer into the drive in theatre in the engine bay on the drivers side frame by the rad support of a first gen Monte. There was plenty of room there and nobody ever checked under the hood for booze. 😁 1 2 Quote

Rob Peters Posted March 30 Posted March 30 What, nobody with stories of 2 or 3 of your friends hiding in your trunk so they didn't gave to Pau? Back in the day trunks were larger and that was possible but then you had to risk getting caught when they were let out where most cars now have fold down back seats where you would only have to sneak into the interior without opening the trunk. rob PS, notice I didn't say or admit to doing such a horrible thing. 1 2 Quote
