I had my A/C apart over the winter and I'm about to reinstall and charge. Trying to determine how much oil remains in the system so I can determine how much oil to add back into the system. I've drained the compressor and I know the capacity for it. I'm replacing the drier but I don't know how much oil will remain in the evaporator and condenser, approximately of course. The lines have been off the car and drained.

Whatever remains (approximation) in the evaporator and condenser will be subtracted from the total system capacity.

Thoughts?

Before you install the drier I would flush the system and rid yourself of old oil and other contaminants and start from scratch.

Yes.

Yes.

PAG oil used in 134A systems is like brake fluid and absorbs moisture. Moisture in those systems can turn acidic, which is NOT good. Like Dennis said, I'd flush the system to get that oil out of there and start with a clean system.

Google A/C system Black Death, and you'll see why it can be bad.

I understand that any moisture in the system is bad, that's why I sealed the remaining system (which had been in use for just a few hundred miles and was operating great) when I removed the compressor last fall. I will not be flushing the system because it's a PIA (and why I sealed the system when I removed the compressor), I will be replacing the drier and evacuating the system thoroughly.

Just trying to figure out how much oil to reinstall back into the system.

There’s no way of knowing how much oil is left in the remaining components. It’s going to have to be a guess. Too much and you’re blowing seals to little and you’re robbing the system of lubricating capabilities.

There are guidelines in the factory service manual about replacing oil in the A/C system too. They do have recommendations when replacing components.

This is great info! I'll break out my factory manual, it never occurred to me that it would have that info. Thanks Joe!!
