BobW Posted May 5 Author Posted May 5 Vacuum pump in, I have brakes again! 😃 Went for a short drive down my road, it's a lot peppier! But I don't think the timing/distributor is set right, may be a tooth off. I have a mechanic friend coming over tomorrow to help me with it. Meanwhile here's the vacuum pump. 6 Quote
BobW Posted May 6 Author Posted May 6 My buddy came by this morning and put his finely trained and knowledgeable ear to work fine tuning the timing and carb. Running, driving and stopping like a champ! 😁 I'm calling this 'chapter' done! 6 Quote

Just curious since there have been a few discussions about them I went with this one from Amazon because it was available in 1 day. The same 'kit' #21846 is available from ebay, summit, jegs etc for a variety of prices! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WHS6R8V?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title I'm looking forward to just driving & enjoying! 😃 1 1 Quote

Almost, not quite... 🤔 I've been chasing a slight coolant drip which I attributed to the lower rad hose at the water pump. Yesterday I moved the car out of the garage and turned it off, and almost immediately saw the slight drip. Pulled it back in, jacked it up and was able to see a slight coolant trail from the weep hole on the pump running to the hose. Apparently after driving the pump got warm enough to immediately evaporate the "trail", but the hose would still show moisture! So.... new Gates water pump and a pair of Gates belts purchased. I'll carry the current age unknown belts as spares. Radiator & March Performance mid-mount all come out. 🙄😪 The March kit was a dealer display, sat assembled with a new water pump, age unknown. I'm guessing the tension of the belts combined with no rotation caused a small deformation in the seal. Are we done yet?! 😂 2 2 Quote

420ponies Posted May 11 Posted May 11 (edited) That's what shakedown runs are for!! Get all the bugs worked out and start to enjoy the ride! Sounds like my 355 SBC, 420 HP MC Vid.mov Edited May 11 by 420ponies added content 5 Quote
BobW Posted May 15 Author Posted May 15 FWIW, 3 hours from radiator drain to ignition on. So far, so good, fingers crossed........ 4 Quote
BobW Posted May 27 Author Posted May 27 Since the cam ID has been a total bust, (short of tearing things apart and measuring with a degree wheel!) I've found a local tuner shop that will do 3 Dyno pulls for $80! That should give me an idea of torque and HP as I consider transmission and final drive options. At the very least I should have a better idea for the stall speed of the converter. 😃 My appointment is Thursday, I'll post results! 4 Quote
BobW Posted May 29 Author Posted May 29 Here's the Dyno sheet. The first 2 were when he was setting up, run in drive big jump 1st - 2nd! The next 2 were in in 2nd gear to 5000 rpm. He felt there was more, I chickened out! I don't know how to interpret this as far a figuring out stall speed of the converter. To me it looks like it locks in around 16-1700. If that's the case I think a converter in the 2400 range will improve drive-ability. Feel free to correct me...... 🤔😉🙂 2 Quote

After driving the car for 2 months with the vacuum pump (and a reservoir) I just wasn't comfortable with the frequency of pump runs. Today I finished swapping the vacuum booster for a Hydroboost pump. Fairly simple installation, and really has very strong pedal feel and reaction, this car has never stopped so hard! Oh, who's idea was it to put an exposed live 12V stud at the horn relay? While removing the vacuum booster I managed to hit that post and blew the fusible link! I put a condom on it! 3 Quote

420ponies Posted July 16 Posted July 16 Those Horn relays are quite $$. Yeah, just never have enough 12v hot spots on these Monte's! I have a 8" Dual Vacuum booster on mine now, since my roller rockers will not clear the valve covers on my new BBC.My brakes are about the same as before with just an accumulator tank for vacuum, plus disc brakes on the rear now. 3 Quote
