Hey I am in the same boat.  I recently got a 70 SS 454.  This is my first project car.  It is my 5th MC, but has always been my dream to own.  I need to get some pics and post them of mine.  Good luck with working on yours.

Doug, we would love to see you join us in Carlisle, PA at our Mini-Meet this June.  As of right now we have 37 members signed up to attend.  It is a great way to meet a large number of our members all in one place and as a bonus a lot of Monte's.  You say yours is a project  That can mean it is drivable or scattered all over the garage so you could come with or without you car.  We always get some members there without a car.  Let me know if you would be interested in attending.

Rob,

Thank you for the invite.  I have talked with Joe a couple times about it.  I am planning to attend.  I just am not able to do all weekend.  I will come by to meet you all at the show.  As of right now I think I will just be a Friday show.  I am still working, only retired Army, as a JROTC Instructor and we have summer camp the week following.  I am excited to see everything.  I have not had anything for a show in years.  My car does run, well, but need to get the fuel situation fixed.  I have something leaking from the top of the tank.  I posted a question on another post.  I really have to get some pics.  I am going to a local show this Sat.  Maybe then.

Great Doug, I look forward to meeting you.  Regarding the post on the fuel leak.  Is your leak coming from the area of the fuel sending unit.  It could just be as simple as the old rubber fuel line from the sending unit to the line going to the front.  It could be coming from the seal where the sending unit mates with the tank.  The seal can be purchased if that is the case.

Rob,

I have not had a chance to look at it yet.  I have spring break next week and hope to get under it and look.  I am willing to buy a new tank kit, but not sure what to buy.  I don't want to spend over $1K like I have seen on a few sites, with no extras.  OGPI has tanks kits for less than $350 for complete kit (seal, sending unit, hardware, straps, rubber for the straps, and gas cap.  I think I am going to call them.  But thanks for the quick response and info.

I am close enough to make a day trip to EN, but not close enough to drive the car comfortably.  So I will just make a showing myself, no car.

Hey Doug it would be great to see/meet you at Carlisle.   Friday is a good day, it does get a little crazy on Sat anyway. I attended about 5 years without my car as i was restoring her. So you really don't need the car, and you will see that once you make the trip one time. You will have a good time for sure!!

As far as the gas tank, don't buy anything until you know what the problem is. Could be something small like a broken/cracked hose, or like what had been said a bad seal. Hope to see you at the show!!

Doug,

I think most people here will tell you to not order anything from OPGi unless you first talk to them live on the phone and verify EVERYTHING you are trying to order is IN STOCK.  They are known for holding entire orders for months because one or two items are on back order (ask me how I know this happens).  Also, their shipping costs are many times much more than other vendors.  There are many vendors out there.  I know Summit stocks our gas tanks because on the way to an Eastern Meet in Ohio a member had a strap securing their Monte on their trailer puncture their tank.  They stopped at Summit in Ohio, purchased one and installed it in the hotel parking lot.

One of the vendors I would recommend is Lutty's in Pennsylvania.  I recently purchased a Sending Unit, Straps w/Insulators, and hardware from them.  The sending unit from them works great!  I just checked prices from Lutty's and they are listed below: Here is a link to Lutty's  https://www.luttyschevy.com/

Gas Tank.................................... $147.00

Sending Unit including Seal........ $45.00

Straps with Insulators..................$29.00

Strap Mounting Hardware...........$   7.00

Sending Unit Locking Ring......... $   2.50

Gas Cap.......................................$  14.00

Total Without Tax........................$244.50

Now, this does not including shipping and tax but it is $100 less than OPGi

Just a note, I ordered the sending unit locking ring but ended up using the one from my old sending unit because the one I ordered tended to want to slip out from under the tank locking area as I tried to tap it into the full locked position.  The rubber connecting 3/8 inside diameter gas line and clamps from the sending unit to the line going to the front can be purchased from any auto parts store.   Also, regarding the hardware kit, it is not the same as original.  That kit is just a couple bolts, washers and nuts and I ended up going and buying some of the bolts that were considerably longer to make it easier to secure reach into the holes in the straps.

Rob,

So, I just looked under the car at the front of the tank.  I am not sure if it is hooked up right.  First, I saw what I assume is a vent on each side of the tank, The top outside edge of the tank.  The were hooked together, has a hose running from side to side.  Then I see coming out the float/sending unit, one hose going to a filter and that splits into two I assume a supply and return, but on the other side of the float was an open tube.  It appears this is where the fuel would be sloshing out when full.  After I run it, and the level goes down it does not leak.  I have to look into it, but I do not thing the hose are all hooked up correctly, should both sides of the float tubes be connected to a hose?

More importantly, thank you for the responses and help.  I am so glad I became a member and have all you guys to talk to!!!

If it has all them vent tubes on the tank it is the incorrect tank. Someone will correct me if I’m wrong but the 70 one line off the sender and one vent in the tank ( passenger side. It’s been on while since I looked at a 70 tank. That tank will work but you just have to plug the vents and not use them.

My 70 tank ha no vents, it is vented through the fuel cap. The sending unit has an outlet pipe and a return pipe (454).

Doug, I just had my tank dropped a few weeks ago to replace the fuel sending unit.  My original sending unit only had one 3/8 inch tube and that is what I installed back into the tank.  My tank did not have any other vents coming from the tank.  Like Chevy Dave said, mine is a 70 is vented through the fuel cap.  I agree with Dennis, if yours has two vents, one on each side it is not the original tank. and I agree with Dennis that you would not need to change the tank because of that, just plug those two vents and don't use them.

Doug i agree with Dennis, you have a 70 right?  Your 70 should NOT have all the vents, just 2 feeds. The 71 and 72 have the vents. I know there is a pic in the manual that's shows it. Also like Dennis said just plug it up for now until you get a chance to change what you need. Don't leave that gas constantly leaking out.

Also check to make sure you have a vented type gas cap when you close up that open tube. Who knows, if it’s not a vented cap, maybe the person that changed the tank had fuel starvation issues and leaving that one tube open solved the problem.

To all,

I just sat down and went through all the many books and paperwork that I got with my car.  Interesting thing, this car was a part of FGMCC back in 2004.  There was a printout from the website and on it, it talked about the 2004 show.  I also have a bunch of paperwork from when the car was in Canada.  I live in Southern Maryland.  It was built in Baltimore, bought there, then ended up in Canada, only to find it's way to Southern Maryland since around 2000.  Kind of crazy.

You can find these cars criss cross the USA, Canada back and forth. My friend has one that was bought in Maryland, found in Florida, moved to Michigan and made it's way back to Florida. As for your fuel tank ,sounds like it's from a '71-'72 Monte. Cap the vent holes on each side, smaller tube is for the return sideband get a vented cap. Should do it for sure. My car ('72), also has the "tank" behind the seat. I call it "the mystery tank" because I have no idea what it does but hey, it all works great! '70 was right before the emissions thing kicked in for the Big 3 in Detroit. Looks to me that Summit has what you need, I'd call and give them info. about your car. Tank (if needed), sending unit. Questions, that's what we are here for.

They do get around....  :)

Montelishi was built in Flint, (although it has a "B" on the plate) was originally sold in Edmonton, Ab. (Sept.'70.) Traveled a bit, and I bought it from a classic dealer in Sudbury, Ont. (May '2019)

Now she's back in Calgary, Ab.

As for the fuel lines..... I have one that runs to the engine, and one that runs up over the diff. with what looks like a fuel filter on the end of it.

Probably aftermarket as the tank is a replacement.

And before they decided to put the unit in the cabin behind the back seat. ;)

Reminds me of that scene in "Easy Rider"......
