Carlos Maldonado Posted April 25 Posted April 25 I'm looking for a set of wheel covers for my 70 monte carlo. They are the ones that have no writing on them, the part number is 3044. They where only used from 70-72 and I believe on 454's only. The image below is what I'm looking for but in much better shape hopefully. Thank you in advance. 1 Quote
Dtret Posted April 25 Posted April 25 Welcome Carlos. That picture shows a pretty dang nice cap and I really don’t see how your going to get much better than that unless someone has NOS in the box. 2 Quote
Dtret Posted April 25 Posted April 25 And to add, I do believe the SS 454 cars all had rally rims with trim rings and derby center caps. I will be corrected if I am wrong. 3 Quote

Also to the best of my knowledge the only first gen Monte that this cap was not standard on was the 72 Custom. I think the 72 custom came standard with the "Turbo" caps but could be ordered with the optional rallies. Like Debnis said, if I am wrong on this someone will correct me. rob 2 Quote

Regarding only being available on the SS. That is not correct, that was the standard wheel cover on the 70-72 Monte, all others were optional with the exception, I think, with the 72 Custom which I think came standard with the "Turbo" caps. I know I have some of the ones you have pictured but I am not sure what condition they are in. I will look and see what I have. I know I have a full set that I want to keep but may have some others. If I do have some others I will make you a deal on them. Here is the deal, if you will become a full fledged dues paying member of the club I will give them to you free of charge with the exception of the shipping costs. Give me some time to get back up to my storage garage where my car is and I will check to see what condition they are in. rob 5 Quote
Dtret Posted April 25 Posted April 25 If you look in the resource section , in the technical section under GM heritage you will find this. Not saying I’m correct though. Also snapshots to save time. If they loaded correctly first pic should be 70 and 2nd should be 71. Look at the only missing asterisk on the pages. 1 Quote
Carlos Maldonado Posted April 25 Author Posted April 25 Thank you all for the information, it would be my pleasure to become a member of this group. The cap pictured is the best one I have, would love to find a full nos set. That would make my year. 2 Quote

That is interesting Dennis and I see what you are saying. Also, on I think page 67, of that same GM Heritage dicument, where it shows the different wheel coverings for the Monte and the SS Monte it shows the plain wheel covering as being Standard and the color keyed wheel cover abd the Rally Wheel as optional with the option. Also in the GM Hetitage document it shows pictures of the SS from a side view with the "SS454" badging and the "Plain Jane" hub caps. Also on our site is It will be interesting to see what others have to say. I am no expert on the SS. rob 1104 1 Quote

RON T Posted April 25 Posted April 25 1970 sales brochure for SS list that they come standard with Rally wheels . 2 Quote

You are incorrect (man, I just LOVE saying that!! 😂🤣). The rally’s were optional … at least in 1970. While RPO PH1 designated the 15 x 7 wheel, RPO PA3 designated the “Special Wheel Cover” which was painted body color. My ‘70 was ordered WITHOUT the rally option but acquired them at some point in its life. I have, however, sourced a set of the PA3’s (in black) which will be going with the car to be painted the correct Shadow Gray when it’s “lightly restored”. They’re not perfect, but I’m sure the small dings can be smoothed out enough to look good. Figured I can rotate between the original equipment caps and the rallies whenever the mood strikes. It’ll really look like a sleeper with the hubcaps I got them from the wife of the gentleman who passed a couple years ago who had those 3 Burgandy SS’s. He had the whole garage full of parts which were purchased by one of our members who is currently taking orders prior to setting up shop in Carlisle. And, Dennis… did I mention you were wrong about all SS 454s coming with rally’s and derby caps? PS - Last picture specifically for you 🤣😂 1 2 Quote
Glen Posted April 25 Posted April 25 So what Rob posted looks to be the most accurate… the ‘70 SS came with the “basic hubcaps”, while the PA3 hubcaps and Rally’s were optional. I’ve also seen other literature that specifically references that the 70s were not offered with the rallies and Derby caps as standard equipment. 2 Quote

If you’re basing that off the caption which accompanies this photo, Rallys as coming standard might be implied , but it’s far from conclusive. And operating under the assumption/premise that the rally wheels, trim ring and derby cap were likely costlier to produce, it’s unlikely most buyers would pass on rally’s in favor of plain or slightly upgraded hubcaps if they indeed came standard. I can’t see too many people going backwards in terms of appearance and/or cost if rally’s were included “free”. Just my 2 cents. 2 Quote
Dtret Posted April 26 Posted April 26 See. I’ve been corrected. Well deserved gents. ( by the way Glen, I do believe I have several sets of the caps you posted, nice too. They make for great target practice. 3 Quote

I’m sure in the brochure they wanted to make it appear you get all features listed. And then charge extra if you wanted them. But weather they were standard items or not, which evidently they were not, they were never free… 3 Quote
Carlos Maldonado Posted April 26 Author Posted April 26 The monte carlo my Dad had was white 454 with a black v top and the wheel covers I'm looking for. I don't know if that's correct. But that's what he had ( waiting to get a nice pic from my brother) when I bought the one I have I decided to make it a tribute car. So that's why I need those caps. 6 Quote
Carlos Maldonado Posted April 26 Author Posted April 26 If any one has some super clean or nos available ( depending on price ) I would be grateful. 2 Quote

They reel ya in with a “loaded” car in the ad then break your heart (and wallet) when they let you know “all that stuff is extra”. I’ve got a couple buddies who are marketing majors, and I’ve heard some great stories about clever (if not borderline unethical) advertising techniques. 3 Quote

DragCat Posted April 26 Posted April 26 When I got my Cougar, it came with the faux wire wheels which was an option in 73. I'm not a fan so that was my first upgrade, keystones. I still have them, as at the time they were going for about $90 a piece. PS. Just looked at the price for 15X7 Keystones.................$350 each 🙃 5 Quote
714024SPEED Posted April 26 Posted April 26 I looked into this years ago and I agree 70 the standard wheel cover was what you got if you didn't option for the rally wheels, but the steel wheel you got was a 15x7 not the standard 15x6 that non SS car got.in 71 the rally was the only wheel you got. 72 customs got The P02 turbine hub cap also with a 15x7 rim. 4 Quote
