Dtret Posted May 3 Posted May 3 Picked this up in Texas. Be careful of what you wish for on a southern car. 72 Custom, loaded, buckets, tilt, tach , big block ( original?) , 12 bolt and more. Total junk. It’s been raining since I got home so I can’t do further investigation. 3 3 Quote
420ponies Posted May 3 Posted May 3 Needs a hood ,fenders, trunk lid. It's a Custom, a 1st gen, get over it !!🙂 4 1 Quote

Blake350 Posted May 4 Posted May 4 If it's optioned as you said...Why yes it is a shame... and totally unnecessary. Maybe it fell into the old "but no, I'm gonna restore it some day dear, I really am! As much as I would prefer to live in a perfect world ,sadly we do not so "ya can't save 'em all" but Dennis you sure do try and that's just great!! 4 Quote
Rob Peters Posted May 4 Posted May 4 It is a shame someone would let a car sit and rot like that. That takes years to get into that condition. What condition is the frame and floorboards like. Going all the way to Texas for something in that condition is a definite dedication to our beloved First Gen Monte'. rob 6 Quote

But I am a man of my word and I told him I would get it. I got $604.39 and 2 1/2 days invested in this car. Plus nos passenger quarter ( rough shape) two power doors and a set of what he said were 70 fenders ( nope 71/72). 5 1 Quote
420ponies Posted May 4 Posted May 4 (edited) '71-'72 have the "step" at the front core support. '70 is straight. Is that correct? No Big Block lurking under the hood? Oops! re-read the post BBC in it. Good to have an extra around! Edited May 4 by 420ponies added content 1 Quote

Dtret Posted May 4 Author Posted May 4 This is crazy. All the tires were flat and junk so I had to put a set of rollers on it. Jack it up to pull the flats and I noticed it had a keyed lugnut. Great, get out the torch. I figured for s…. & giggles I’d look and see if the key was in the glove box. Yes it was. WOW.With this luck I bet it will run and drive. lol. 😝 3 3 Quote

Dtret Posted May 4 Author Posted May 4 I pulled the hood, before it killed me, radiator, fan and shroud ( not a big block shroud) and alternator. It’s a number matching 402. It does have the big block steering shaft also. I was able to clean the glass enough to get the vin and verify “u” code. I pulled the back seat, no docs but I did find snake skin and a live mouse. ( I took it and put it next to the neighbors camper lol). Any other places you guys have found build sheets? 72 Van Nuys car. 3 Quote
420ponies Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Check in the backs of the bucket seats, top of glove box, under rear bottom seat. Those are all the ones I know of. 2 Quote

Blake350 Posted May 4 Posted May 4 imagine if it was a "W" code, some of us might need therapy...but lets face it a "U" code is bad enough!! 2 Quote

If you cant find a build sheet Dennis, you might have to get the mouse back and do an autopsy! He probably ate the snake also!!! lol 4 Quote
MCfan Posted May 5 Posted May 5 That is simply shocking- I've never seen a first gen Monte in that bad of condition!! Hope you can get some usable parts from it. Restoring it would be akin to resuscitating roadkill, IMO. Good luck! 3 1 Quote
