GRAY 70 Monte Carlo Posted May 19 Posted May 19 Anyone installed a ZZ4 engine and have the fuel pump hit crossmember . If so how did you correct it Quote
Grant MacPherson Posted May 20 Posted May 20 Didn't someone heat and reshape the crossmember to make enough room? Or am I dreaming again? Quote
DragCat Posted May 20 Posted May 20 Theres a bunch of possible issues with an engine swap, maybe some discussed in the below article. https://www.hotrod.com/how-to/chevy-350-zz4-engine-upgrades   1 Quote
Jason72 Posted May 20 Posted May 20 I ve massaged mine with an air hammer. Many of the aftermarket pumps don’t fit… Quote

Crate 383 had an oversized mechanical pump. The cutout was about 1/2" too shallow to fit the pump, so out came a handheld propane torch, a 3/4" round steel bar, and a big hammer. Slowly shaped the cutout by heat, bash a little, test fit. Wash, rinse, repeat until I had about 1/4" gap all around. A few passes with a flap disc in the angle grinder cleaned up some of the carnage, and then applied POR15 and glossy Rust-Oleum top coat. With solid engine mounts, that's plenty of space to prevent contact. Quote
GRAY 70 Monte Carlo Posted May 21 Author Posted May 21 I appreciate all responses and have considered all options. First option was electric fuel pump I had installed it in the front pulling fuel that worked for a while then had problems with the pump and found that would not work without putting it in the rear and setting the pump up as a gravity feed pushing the fuel .not really what I wanted to do at this time. Next option to try to massage the crossmember to gain clearance for the pump. Problem with that is I stupidly did not test fit engine on n frame before I had frame powder coated so at this time I don’t want to mess up the power coating. With all that said l have located a mechanical fuel pump M16011 it is a smaller diameter It does fit . It has 7.5 to 9 lbs psi with a 46 gph flow rate. The pump that came with the engine part number 6415325 is a 7 lbs psi and a 40 gph flow rate .so tomorrow I am installing it and adding a pressure regulator because the ZZ4 engine only requires 7 lbs psi to the holley carburetor. Wish me luck will post tomorrow hopefully and let everyone know how it works out hopefully this might help someone out. 3 Quote

FairlyRandom Posted May 21 Posted May 21 (edited) Lol wish I had found a stock size pump when I was bashing my car and wrecking my eardrums   Edited May 21 by FairlyRandom Quote
GRAY 70 Monte Carlo Posted May 23 Author Posted May 23 Update on fuel pump hitting crossmember.i was able to swap to the fuel pump I had listed in a earlier post that at this time seems to have corrected my problem. I have a small leak in a fitting that must be correct but shouldn’t been be a big problem. One thing I wanted to add about my situation is that my Monte is a 1970 model with no fuel return line to gas tank where I believe that 71 and 72s have a return but in my research I had seen pumps with returns as in the post above by Scott S. I hope this helps someone Quote
GRAY 70 Monte Carlo Posted May 23 Author Posted May 23 This is what I had to get to correct my leak 2 Quote
