420ponies Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Well, Going to go back through this carb., and find out what happened. Took the front bowl off and took needle and seat out. Nothing inside it. When I limped it back home, I knew it was flooding itself, could barely keep it running, and stalled at the 1st red light(no idle). Got it home, had to turn the throttle screw 2 turns just to get it in the garage. Checked the plugs, not too bad. CLY.#6 was wet, rest just a shade dark, but dry. Another new set in it ,and a spare set for the tool box. I removed the side sight glass on the bowl (before I removed the carb from engine, gas just poured out. Knew it was something in the needle and seat. So, bought a new filter(can't believe something got past it), rebuild kit, base gaskets, high flow needle and seat, and some good power valves. Have it back on next week, go for another shake down run. It ran really good on the way down to the shop (25 miles, 1 way), and started the mess half way home. After I get the carb back on and do the run, new oil and filter, double checks and should be ready for another longer run, this time 75-100 miles. Boy, with that lower 1st gear, it shifts through it fast!...... going to have to watch that right foot!. 10 Quote

The Holley 3310 series is actually rated at 780 cfm. I have built them before with the better anti-blow out power valves, vent tubes to prevent hard braking from flooding the fuel bowls, etc. They are a great carb, and I had better results with tuned Holley carbs vs the Edelbrock carbs. On my current 414ci fresh built big block, I have a new Holley Street Demon 750 cfm carb on it. 3 Quote

420ponies Posted June 6 Author Posted June 6 (edited) Mine is a 3310-2. I've had this carb on multiple builds. I have always used it to "get it running". I just believe I had to go through it again and change everything. It runs way better now. I'm thinking it is the power valve giving me the problem now. Going to check the vacuum in gear (700rpm), and might drop to a 5.5 power valve. The jet sizing looks right on the plugs. Just can't understand why it " popped " just off idle and one time open throttle. No problems with it after that happened. Don't they only sell the blow proof valves now? 72 Monte Carlo Posted June 6 Posted June 6 Jim, I think the blow proof power valves are the best thing to keep from popping them. It could have just been the age of the PV causing it to pop. l think the 3310 carb I have is a 3310-2 as well. 2 Quote
